The factory manual driveshaft isn't all that heavy & will weigh mine once we pull it out but I believe it will be just a few lbs at most. There's far more benefits than weight that transfers into performance between the 2 styles of shafts.

The carbon shaft will hold 1000+

Besides weight, whats the added benefit? Mine is holding great. Most guys even with big singles use the oem shaft. I was hoping for a 10 lbs difference.

How did you mate the M3 shaft to the 335i gearbox? I ask because I heard of a fellow E6X owner who installed E6o M5 LSD and driveshaft on his non-M sedan and said he didn't need a guibo or output flange.

On my personal E61 I run full M5 drivetrain including M5 MT output flange, guibo, and M5 hardware. Everything needed to be M5 spec since it is a larger diameter than non-M. I get really curious when I hear people upgrading to M3/M5 drivetrain drivetrain but not swapping output flanges and guibos, from my research that simply can't work or will likely lead to a failure down the road. Curious what your experience was.

E9X M3 and E6X M5 output flanges are exactly the same and the LSD cases are the same so for all intents and purposes of this conversation the M drivetrains are of the same beefyness.

Mainly weight since the driveshafts historically fail at the joints and not the shaft itself so it would be wise to observe joint design/strength over shaft if durability is the gaol.

RealOEM lists:
335i MT Driveshaft 1470mm 9.3kg
M3 MT Driveshaft 1433mm 11.3kg

MFactory has a CF M3 shaft which is 5kg so the CF unit saves 14lbs based off that info but I would say ~10lbs is a safe guess for oem vs CF.

I am a little dumbfounded why High HP 335i guys are not all over M3 drivetrain. It can be a expensive to have BMW driveshafts custom lengthed/rebuilt due to the machine welding (or whatever the process is called) but after you have the shaft dialed in all the other components are bolt-on. For MT 335i cars they can source a LSD from a DCT car. Final drive gearing is 3.15 which would be a nice option considering non-M MT cars have 3.08.

In contrast both SMG and MT E60 M5 LSDs are 3.62 which is a big jump and less than ideal for most applications with how much torque N54 engines can make. Personally I will run the 3.62 just to see how it goes but I have a feeling I will try to swap it for for the 3.15

I need the lower gearing. I have so much power the taller gearing would be useless and id loose top end. I want to hit 200. Even with a 3.08 my final drive redline is 196mph. And there really hasnt been a strength issue. Plenty of guys running big singles on 335i stuff. Havent heard of failures except for axels. Rear diff lock down pretty much fixes thst or you can get beefier axels. Just cheaper to stay 335i and no real benefit to m3.

Put some real sticky tires on your car, do some hard launches at the track & than report back to us please.

If you want to use the factory shaft than you will use the 335 tranny side but will need the m3 diff side. The shaft needs to be shortened & than rebalanced. I decided to go with a custom 1 piece carbon shaft.

Did all but track. Sticky tires, hard launches. Waiting for it too cool a bit first. It hasn't been below 80s yet since upgrades. Maybe in November or December.

Looks like another broken driveshaft. View the new Vargas thread (11.04 @ 136mph)

The driveshaft is known to break at a part that has yet to be upgraded. Does anyone know if there are any vendors that sell a complete reinforced driveshaft?

I know @buraq had issues when he was drag racing. I'm going to be doing the same soon.
Hi,

Sorry for reviving an older thread. Did you know if Dodson (or any other vendor) sells upgraded clutches for the ZF6HP21? Thanks
