Car accelerating and braking autonomously?!!
Hi all,
I have had a 2007 335i for a while now and enjoyed years of joy but at 12yrs old it has presented with a pretty serious issue. On driving home tonight the car kind of bogged down and then started to accelerate and brake with zero input from me, quickly on and off. Naturally I went straight on the brakes but when I did they were stiff and felt like the ABS had kicked in (you know that hard grinding feeling?) I am not going to drive it again and am currently waiting for Monday to arrive so that I can call my local dealer or the roadside assistance bods that come with the insured warranty. Has anyone experienced anything similar? |

It has cruise control but it wasn't on at the time, it was as if I was trying to accelerate and brake in quick succession at around 1k rpm, it didn't sound great either. The brakes feeling weird was just as worrying, they worked but didn't feel like they would, if that makes sense?

Rasa wins!
The guy came out, there were no codes but was slow crank and he said alternator was all over the place before settling down. Initially thought it was alternator issue as battery test came out as ok (albeit it with low reading) - but just as we were talking about it I got a 'very low battery' warning and engine warning on idrive. I have decided to put it on a reconditioning cycle (battery test said battery good but recharge) rather than ship it over to BMW for them to say Battery is goosed, here's your bill for diagnosis and an overpriced replacement. If the issue still persists after that I will get it over to BMW. Thanks for pointing me to the battery rasa, I made sure it was the first thing he checked. I will update the thread FYI and hopefully to help others. Last edited by Phil35; 04-08-2019 at 05:15 AM.. |

If you do have to put a new battery on it you will need to register it to your car so as the intelligent charging system knows that a new battery has been fitted.
No real need to pay main dealer prices, when I had a new battery fitted I was charged £40 to fit & register it & I believe the Exide battery was around £80

Great that you got the bottom off it.
I’m running an ‘07 335i too & on the original battery still. I will keep this thread in mind for when mine eventually gives out. |

Update...
Having run a reconditioning cycle on my CTEK charger for around 14hrs on Monday we used it for the first time today and the same thing happened with the added bonus of an associated flat tyre monitoring failure. It's now been recovered to BMW with suspected alternator issue, will update again once I hear more. If it IS the alternator that is the problem and the battery is gone/faulty I wonder if they'd consider lobbing a new one in for free given the charging profiles will be all over the place? Nah, me neither... |

Latest -
When it went in I also mentioned a historic issue with limp mode on WOT so some of the following will be related to that and the rest the issue I originally wrote about. So, apparently it needs a new HPFP (assume for the limp mode on WOT issue) as well as a new wheel sensor - the caliper has seized on one of the wheels which in turn has damaged the disc and pads so all of those will be replaced too. Thank the lord for warranties... |
