maintenence woes
So, I tried to change out the oil in all 3 differentials (front/rear/transfer case) today plus the manual transmission fluid.
I heard a few guys using a "homemade" 14mm allen wrench by taking a 14mm bolt to take the fill plugs off. All I managed to do was to break the bolt in half. The fill/drain plugs are on there tight! I also noticed a big bmw sticker on the transmission reminding me the fluid is "lifetime" and not to change it. I did have an 8mm allen for the fill plug there, but without an extension I couldn't torque it hard enough to get it off. Note, my car was on a lift over my head, so I was cranking on the wrench pretty well. In any case, fail. I guess I'll head to harbor freight and get a real 14mm allen, and something to turn my 8mm a bit harder... any advice appreciated... |

I punched the 14mm hex bit out of a 1/2" drive socket and then used a 14mm box gear wrench to remove the xfer case fill plug. Took me literally three minutes. I believe I put the hex bit into the gear wrench and the slid them up together into the plug.
