Hey guys,

Car: 335i 2009 convertible with 75000 miles on the car

Noticed this 2 days in a row now.

After a 30 min journey - I get a engine temperature Waring in the IDrive and to drive moderately - if the problem persists then to contact your mechanic.

Funny thing is, few weeks ago I went into NRMA (big mechanic in Australia) as they service the car and repaired an prev faults I’ve had - and told them I felt the engine seems hot. They ran some tests and said everything was fine.
I also googled of other people had hot engines,
As my bonnet is super hot over one spot - and found everyone is in the same boat.

I’ve seen no leaks from the car, and the coolant levels are good.

Think it’s a faulty sensor?

As soon as I turn the car off and back on, that warning disappears.

The engine temperature on the car dash stays at the midline +/- a little either side (170 degrees Celsius)

Water pump is not like a fuel pump, it goes quickly.

This might be really silly questions

1) how would I verify if it’s the water pump?

2) why does it disappear when I restart the engine - and it won’t appear for maybe till the next day?

3) if it’s a water pump failure - why does the engine temp on the dashboard not go really high - it’s always kept at midline - even in sports mode.

1) Your car will be storing codes related to the water pump; it is also a common item to fail. Your car will also sound like a truck in parking lots as the electric fan runs at its highest setting.

2) It could fix the issue with the water pump temporarily. It tends to fail electrically.

3) Your car shows your engine oil temperature on the dashboard, not your coolant temperature

So if I go back to my mechanic and he hooks it up, he should get a water pump fault correct?

Also, from what I’ve read online, theirs a secret menu we can access that gives us the water coolant temp correct?

I’m thinking, check the temp before I leave to go home from work. 30 min drive and see the temp again? And it should be drastically higher correct?

Would anyone know rough cost in Sydney (Australia) for replacing the water pump? And would it be covered under the warranty that you get with the car when bought from a dealer here (so far this warranty has been useless)

One thing I should mention, not sure if it makes a difference:

When I went to the garage a few weeks back, the Mrs got that message - she was waiting, with the car running to collect me, maybe 30 mins - then the engine heat message on the IDrive appeared.

That’s when I went to the garage - they ran tests and couldn’t find any faults.

That was weeks ago, and I’ve driven the car daily (in sports mode) and no issues.

It’s only these last 2 days - I’ve had that warning in a row.

I’m reading that it’s an electric component - can I wait till it completely buggers before I replace it? (If it is the water pump) - or should I get it replaced as a matter of urgency -

Hope that makes sense. Sorry again if I sound stupid. No idea what I’m doing with cars

Your car is already overheating. Replace the water pump and thermostat ASAP.

another sign is that your Rad Fan is Blowing Super Fast Speed.
Water pump and Tstat replace them.
After Replacing them, then delete the codes that are stores in memory.
Dont forget to do a Coolant Purge or Bleeding procedure.

Also don't waste time and fill it with BMW Coolant ONLY.

The water pump can fail without any errors whatsoever being thrown until you are left stuck waiting for a tow.

Replace it NOW.

My Water Pump went out last weekend . Went from Yellow to Red
real fast. Ista d says no communication with water pump. Has the classic
radiator fan runs all the time symtom. Do not drive an inch farther than
you need to pull over . Got a toe home since it was the weekend goes
into the Indy tomorrow. I would change it myself if I had a real car Lift.
I ran Ista D a few months ago it was clear of any engine codes the only
thing on it now is no communication with water pump.
My guess is a generic scanner would not even read that.

You do not want to drive any car an inch farther than you have to on
a overheating engine unless you want to buy a new Engine.

Codes from a BMW capable scanner or Inpa /Ista d

If you don't want to be helpless and at the mercy of some hack
mechanic or a dealership that will turn you upside down
to empty your pockets do you self a favor.

Get the Standard Tools suite(Inpa suite) and Ista D going on
a PC . Bimmergeeks.net
Or get protools from bimmergeeks for your phone.

Now I’m scared.

I did drive it back - but just assumed it was ok, as no warning except for that drive moderately on IDrive.

I checked the engine temp and coolant temp with the secret menu and it was stable.

How would I know if the engine was actually overheating?

The car is at the garage, they ran the diagnostics - and it was the water pump - getting it replaced with NMRA (Sydney) - quoted $1800 - is that a bit pricy (water pump and thermostat.

From your experience guys - you reckon I’ve wrecked the engine because it drive it to the garage?

Stop posting until you hear from the garage, you’re only driving yourself and us crazy. You cannot change what has or hasn’t happened but tried to debate good advice all the way.

Now you’re good. You’re getting the failed replaced and not continuing to overheat the motor. For aussie dollars that sounds about right.

Just do like 30 mins of reading on here next time. This is the most common failure for these cars...

Update and a few questions.

Water pump and thermostat replaced - they’ve reset the codes, bled the coolant and replaced it.

Been driving for the last hour - feels good, also swear it’s faster (acceleration is better?) - is that me just raving?

I also feel the engine is still hot!!

Almost like you can smell the heat, if that makes sense.

No error messages or anything.

The engine temp on dashboard is stable, and so is the coolant temp via the secret menu at 107 degrees celciuis.

Is their any way of actually checking the engine temp?

I just wanna make sure I’m not ever heating it.

engine (bay) should be hot, nothing wrong there.

The engine is more efficient when it's hot. Next time you get an error message don't ignore it, it's trying to tell you something
