Long term durability of 335d

I am in the market to purchase a 335d right now. I've located the car I want, but before pulling the trigger, I would like to gather some opinions on the long term durability of the 335d. I am hoping to run this car to at least 200k miles.

Reading about valvetrain carbon deposits, a flawed EGR/PCV design and multiple head replacements over here has me slightly concerned. Does anyone here have a high mileage 335d that has managed to avoid these issues, or should I resort to the thinking that these are issues I will eventually have to deal with during ownership?

I think we don't have enough empirical data but a lot of theories and maybe some reasonable wishful thinking. I want to keep mine to 200k+ too. Now at 10k and about to invest some suspension upgrade bucks.

My thoughts:

1. It may help if you got the EGR recall done at a lower mileage point. I got mine done around 5k.
2. It may help if you drive the car hard and/or at mostly highway+ speeds.
3, It may help if you use good quality fuel.
4. It may help if you use a good fuel additive.
5. It may help to get a walnut shells blasting every 40-50k miles.

Any other ideas.

Everyone is trying to extrapolate the long term reliability. But the fact is we have no solid proof yet. My take based on the fact BMW has been building Diesels for decades is the base mechanics of the engine is very reliable.

I think one area of concern is the same for any modern high pressure direct injection engine, fuel delivery system and injectors, including gasoline engines.

The one potential issue for the D is around all the emission controls and what appears is a tendency for excessive carbon build-up in the EGR/Intake system. If you are willing to accept you 'may" need to have this cleaned one or twice in 200K miles, then very likely you will not be disspointed with the car.

I would expect that if this indeed becomes common, more efficient procedures will be developed and the cost of the cleaning will come down. I still have yet to determine if the head really needs to come off to clean the intake paths, or can everything just be vacuumed out when done in place.

I am currently at 28K (I know not much), have never used any additives (just like BMW recommends). I've not seen an SES yet. As my car was a service loaner for the first part of it's life, it was likely driven hard before all the EGR updates were done. This probably was a good thing! The only special thing I do is to only purchase diesel from stations that seem to have a lot of activity, so the fuel will be fresh. I don't go to that station down the road with ONE diesel pump, that I NEVER see anyone using.

Me on the contary I have used additive cleaner and cetane booster I hv had the oxygen sensor go bad and the EGR issue after that car has been running great until I stopped using both items and then i had not only the SES go on but also go on LIMP Mode I turned car off limp mode went off, and I ran the 1/2 race twice at 150 mph after that the car purrred at me, ever since that im getting anywhere from 21-23 mpg city and 36-42 mpg highway and trust ME I drive her like a two cent whore.

200K and running strong definitely seems to be a good posibility. Look at this one at over 145k.

I have 91,000 on my 2010 335d and would not recommend it. I've had 7 trips to the shop and over $8,000 in repairs in the last 12 months. I do 90% or more on the highway at 65-75 mph.

Please do share the details of your ownership with your 335d. It will be very interesting see what issues you encountered.

Happy to. I tried to make a new thread but looks like I don't have permissions. Guess I need to post more first?

Potential annoyances would be SCR system, injector failure, EGR. Right now every vehicle should've had the EGR/SCR recall work. I also question the need for head removal to address carbon. It seems that it's SOP to.have this work done when an injector is replaced but I wonder if an "Italian tune-up" would have the same effect. I've had no problems with my car. I drive mostly highway over 70 mph and every month while on the hwy I drive a few miles over 3.5 rpms. Car has been fine.

Btw..all diesels have some soot/carbon build up.

335d long term reliability

I am up to 102k miles on my 2010 335d. I had a major issue around 60k with the injector calve intake. $15k later (bmw paid most of it) I am now up to almost the same mileage and I am wondering if I should sell before I have the same issue again. Please let me know if you have a335d with more than 100k on it.

That's strange, I don't recall Metalic Barbera Red being an option when I ordered my 2009, maybe it is one of those special orders. @Soroco1136 I am going on 106k and no major problems, but I don't want to jinx myself.

I'm also in the market to purchase a 335d with the hope of keeping it for a long time without major and costly trouble. I'd too would like to hear from the high mileage owners.

Please do share your 335d ownership details with us. I'm looking to purchase one, but I'm currently doing cautious research. I also do 90% plus highway driving at 75-80. I know that I will be very happy with the performance and fuel economy. However, if a 335d turns out to be very expensive long-term then I may have to pass. $8000 in repairs in a year is a lot.

engine itself is very reliable, there are many examples in europe with big mileage, but it require high quality low-sulphur diesel fuel, which, it seems, not available in US and Canada

I posted earlier in this thread. I'm now at 41K miles and have had zero issues, have yet to see an SES light (actually on every gas BMW I've owed have seen one by this mileage). Besides recalls only warranty item was replacing the AC compressor belt. I have never used an additive. It's been single digits here this week and she starts right up. Only once did I notice a 1 second glow plug delay.

Hot damn that's some mileage you got there on the odometer! Is that a new record around here?

just out of shop

We like the car a lot. Nothing US made that we would want to replace our 335d with. Just got out of the shop had been in for 20 days,(over holidays so likely would have been less time), on an SES light which came on and was reset then came back in 10 days. Had a 46b7,4d35, 4b82 and 4862 fault code. Had an o-ring replaced. They replaced the EGR for excessive soot buildup restricting EGR valve. Then faulted a 4b82 and 4862 code. Replaced charge air temp sensor, test drove faults showed again. Installed Mass air meter and cleared adaptations test drove 50 miles and faults did not come back. Everything being done to this car according to the SA was coordinated through BMW NA.

Question, looking at keeping and getting the extended warranty. Which do most people get? Powertrain Plus, or Gold? I don't have navigation so wouldn't consider Platinum.

All emissions related warranty lasts till 70k miles. EGR valve is not included in the emissions warranty. Turbos are.
