As for collision, I'd rather not share as I find it to be INCREDIBLY high. My record is imperfect, but Geico quoted me half of what I'm paying Progressive now...

Anecdotes aside, I think collision is worth it as my car has a decent value for private sales (according to kbb).
I hit a deer in April at 348,000 miles on the clock. $5,700 repair estimate. Got $4,300 in value from my insurance company. Salvage price was $450. So the repair is costing me a bit under $2K. Without comprehensive... SOL.

this topic of comparing insurance rates is pretty useless and it should be more of a regional type of topic

The prices vary so much depending on where you live that you can not really compare prices .

for me, the majority of the cost was in liability and comprehensive only added $150 a yr with a $500 deductiable, so i thought it was worth the extra protection. I know these cars are not cheap to fix.

I pay $900 a yr, full coverage , $500 deduct.

My car is worth more that I wish to self-insure but the reality is my full coverage policy is really cheap just over $600/year.

Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision. Comprehensive typically covers damage from fire, vandalism or falling objects (like a tree or hail).
Animal collisions are considered unavoidable, the same as a parking lot incident where someone hits your parked car, or vandalizes it. A deer collision does not affect your policy rates.

My dog, on drugs at the time, bit the living shit out of my E90. Tore holes in the bumper cover, bit the fender lips, and scratched the shit out of the rocker panels. Comperhensive covered it. I carry a $100 deductible.

Most importantly, Comprehensive covers rodent damage.

In the UK we have,

'Comprehensive car insurance' which means regardless of fault all cars involved in the accident will be repaired or paid out if total loss.

'Third party fire & theft insurance' which means if accident is your fault insurance company will only pay damages to the third party car not your own. This is also the bare minimum required by law to drive a car in the UK.

Can someone tell me how this compares to comprehensive & collision in north america? I hired a car out in Canada a couple months ago and i remember reading these terms and assumed comprehensive is the full cover like in the UK - obviously not. Phew!

I worked auto claims for a few years.

To sum it up very simply:

Collision - damage to your vehicle that is caused by you (ex: you lose control and hit a tree because you were speeding)

Comprehensive - damage to your vehicle caused by "other than collision" or acts of God, such as deer hits, theft, vandalism, rodent damage. Depending on policy glass coverage could fall under this or be separate

Liability - damage you cause to other vehicles/people/property (ex: you rear-end someone, your liability pays their repair bill and medical)

Uninsured motorist - damage caused to your vehicle by someone else who does not carry insurance, or by a phantom vehicle, which is a hit and run.

Most states require all drivers to carry a minimum of liability and uninsured insurance:

From the CT DMV website: "In Connecticut, you are required to have liability car insurance at the following minimum limits: $25,000 for bodily injury, per person per accident. $50,000 for bodily injury, total per accident. $25,000 for property damage per accident."

I believe there is now a $50,000 uninsured motorist minimum as well. You can have more coverage if you choose to pay more, but must carry at least the minimum.

the minimum liability coverage in most states is nowhere near enough; if you only have the minimum you are going to get ass-raped if something ever happens.

How long ago did you work in claims? I just sent you a PM. I have a claims questions if you do not mind me asking!

You won't find my rwd/stickshift/low-miles e91 for that kind of money on Craigslist - my agreed-value insurance still says it's worth nearly $23K. And where I am (Maine) that full coverage is <$500/yr with low deductibles and high limits.

Insurance is entirely individual, making sweeping generalized comments about it is pointless. It ultimately comes down to - can you afford to take the hit? If it is easier to pay an extra $100/mo so that you don't have to take a chance on swallowing a $5-10K loss, so be it. In an ideal world we would all be the multi-millionaire next door and self-insure.

exactly this.

the cost difference over liability and comprehensive to add collision is like another $100 a year.

dumb not to carry it at that price.

Yup. Especially if there are injuries.

I found that adding a *lot* of liability is very cheap -- I went up to $2M and it was only $100 per year. DC is half lawyers. i'd rather have liability covered and figure out repairs on my own.

Yes. Also if you're handy it's nice having the option to fix it yourself.
