so can you play music through the ipod when it's connected? Or is it just for charging purposes?

Yeah, that's correct, you control it from the dock. It works with manual also. The end wire of this is a female part that connects to bmw Iphone cable, so it's really just an extension cord from the dock that goes into ashtray. Attaching pic. This set up lets you control Ipod/Iphone without opening console, and you play whatever you want. Convenient with apps for music like pandora.
