Nope in my opinion , generally i buy a car for what it does, not how cheap it is to run.

No, Ive bought cars that only achieved 13mpg, Ive bought some that would get 30. Its about the car. If you are in a financial position where every penny counts then yes you should think about it. Me I buy the car.

Unless you have access to cheap petrol or plenty of £££ ofcourse it matters. It's all well and good saying you bought it with your heart but in the real world its your wallet that has to cough up £80-90 everytime you fill up

Still I'm amazed at what the 335 can manage when driven with a light right foot....Went down to M1/M25 at rush hour to pick up my wheels from Ian today, speed was 65-75 depending on traffic, also ran into the inevitable traffic jams on the M25/M1 (both on the return trip post rush hour bizzarly)

The mpg in the V10 M6 didnt bother me (it was actually not bad - 22ish), it was the range due to a pathetic tank that was a PITA.

I am not bothered about MPG, and I also do a lot of miles.


My old man has a M5 Touring with that STONKING V10, he does more miles than me and it does not bother him that he gets low MPG.

Every time we drive our cars it feels like an occasion, even when not giving it the beans!!

Depends how you look at it

Given that Petrol & Diesel prices are made up mainly of taxes and duties a low consumption car protects you a little bit from the confiscatory high tax regime in the UK

It may surprise you to learn that UK tax and duties on petrol and diesel are 18% higher than the next EU country and 80% higher than the unweighted average

Tax is currently at 59% and was as high as 85% under Gordon Brown, himself a non-driver

So its not the consumption of the car that worries me, its the fact that about the only thing I can do these days without paying tax is fart.

I recently bought my m3 going from a diesel knowing it wasnt the best on fuel. But of course it matters what mpg it does and yes I do appreciate the beautiful engine but the more mpg it does means more money in my bank or spend on my family. I don't want to just throw it away bit if you want a nice car you have to pay to play

I'd say it does matter now that petrol is so expensive and let's face it only going to get more expensive.

I'm getting 18ish to the gallon. Can I afford it, yes, do I grudge it, actually yes. I understand that some will be willing to pay to hear the V8 noise, and it is nice, but its a big D for me next time. Can't be bothered with £85 for 220 miles.

Bit of a stumble really andy. I was going to see a 323i again for that V6 but suddenly saw the 320i with IMHO a great colour / spec combo. Le Mans blue with grey leather and 19"s. The 325i was grey and an SE not the 'M' sport. Must admit all that was on my mind was to try and convince myself that the power was enough. First test drive answer was no, but when out again and drove it with less aggression and it felt totally different.

Also I am finding that in running / purchase costs it is a big saving. First year about £6,000.

Once I put on the performance twin pipe exhaust no one will know any different.

You do realise BMWs are not v6 engines right? Just you're referring to a 323 being a v6

BMW use straight six engines. Or inline six. Which ever you prefer, they are a very different animal from the unbalanced and rougher v6's

Only the bigger engines move to the V configuration. Such as the v8 in the m3 and v10 in the m5

Yes you are correct, my mistake. Coming from V6's and being new to BMW I had forgot about the configuration.

Yes the exhaust, lol I was thinking yes my neighbours will know.

Then the front grill is a giveaway, the slats on yours are likely black rather than chromed. And of course one of us here would likely notice the brake size lol

Yeh my kidneys are the black OEM additions from my dealer, but yes the brakes would give it away, good point

I do look at costs, and getting value for money does sit better.

I've just gone back to a 3.0-litre petrol, (F11 535i) after a 330d. The fact fuelling will cost about 10% more over my mileage, is a very small price to pay in the big scheme of running costs, so mpg is not such a big deal, if the engine is going to put a big grin on my face every mile I drive.

It may feel more painful at the pumps, but as I look at running costs 'per mile' over the time I have a vehicle, I don't see a few mpg as too important, compared to trying to keep a control on depreciation, the biggest cost in motoring if you run a decent car.
