Acceleration issues below 2.5k-rpm, rattling sound, 320i e92 2008
Hello all!
My first post after being a thread stalker for about the past year and unfortunately it's not on good terms. For the last 3-4 months, I have had an ongoing issue of: upon cold start (with the mornings/nights being particularly cold) there is a loud rattling (almost like a marble in the engine) noise, this is present during idle and when accelerating in low rpms (up to about 2.5rpm). If I accelerate anywhere below 2.5rpm this rattling noise + a massive lack of power in acceleration is present. (the noise not being my main concern). The noise will usually disappear once the engine is warm however it is becoming worse. My main concern is, its gotten to the point that anytime my foot is 3/4 (or less) of the way to the floor and I am under 2.5rpm when trying to accelerate I kid you not I either gain no speed or actually lose speed. If I plant my foot the engine will gradually accelerate but not at the expected pace. The car just feels like there is nothing there when below 2.5rpm and it is getting worse and worse by the day to the point that I believe any relatively steep hill would be impossible to make it up and it just feels like it is going to breakdown any moment. As soon as it hits about 3km there is a huge gradual surge of power as if its finally waking up and in a sense feels right again. The problem was minor a couple months ago and is slowly getting worse. It did not seem apparent when I bought the car almost a year ago. I am not 100% the noise and acceleration issue are related however it does feel/sound like they go hand in hand. I have replaced the coil packs as this was my first thought when I first encountered the problem and have taken to the belt with a tensioner. I have recently had the spark plugs replaced too. No bad codes I have taken the vehicle to my mechanic 3 times for the same issue with their investigations always resulting in nothing found. I am suspecting the Vanos at this point but I am by no means I BMW pro. Car is 2008 320i e92 with 105000km on the clock, auto trans. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Which engine? Are you getting any error codes?
I was getting random Vanos errors, had a light "lifter tick" noise, poor low-down power, and lousy fuel consumption Any of this sound familar? Cleaning the Vanos filters gave a massive improvement https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=900394

This is the procedure to do it. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...aft/1VnYmIaqqt There is a special tool needed which only BMW or a BMW specialist will have. Google BMW N43 N46 timing chain and you will see how big the issue is. |

Does your car run in valvetronic mode? Check it with ISTA-D. There could be faulty valvetronic and the car could run in limp mode. Also try to clean and test your solenoids (this way:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWQ-ZDzD0Lo&t=307s). Use your car battery. Also you can try to de/activate vanos units intake/exhaust in ISTA-D/INPA and check if the noise stops. It would be faulty solenoid/vanos unit if the rattle stops. If it is faulty valvetronic (you will see in ISTA) check your eccentric shaft sensor for oil and try to re-learn limits of valvetronic motor in ISTA. If it fails to learn, it will be probably damaged vvt motor or damaged ecc shaft, if there is a oil in sensor - replace it (or clean with brakes cleaner until replacing). The worst is bad timing or stretched chain but you would probably notice huge lack of power in higher RPMs and very bad cold starts.
Without testing in ISTA/INPA it is impossible to find the problem but if you do it can tell you a lot. Check VVT adaptions, VANOS adaptions, positions of camshafts, knocking, lambdas. If I was you, I would start with cleaning solenoids, reseting adaptions and checking what goes to red numbers first in INPA. Then testing in ISTA and lastly replacing any parts without knowing why. Good luck! EDIT: If your engine has the vanos filters also check/replace them together with solenoids. |

I have the N43 engine and experienced same symptoms.
At that mile I would eliminate possible faulty injectors before you spend money elsewhere. Check the spark plug condition for clues. From what you described its same as what another member posted few weeks ago. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1628142 |
