500wtq?! That's awesome! I'm going to keep the motors relatively stock for now. I live in the Lake Murray area. I'm guessing you're in San Diego as well?

Yes, I'm in SD as well. La Mesa was my second guess, lol. I lived near Navajo during college.

That was a quick car but it's too bad it wasn't an e90.

Thought I'd take a picture of the two before prepping for this weekend's track event. Then my wife pulls up, so why not a picture of all three? Camera distortion makes the LCI look significantly wider than the pre-LCI. Strange.

At this point, "track prepping" is only swapping out the style 162 18's for style 158 (which are apparently made by BBS) with 225/17/45. Anything else I should do to get the car ready?

Car control clinic and autocross in the pouring rain. With the current set up, the vehicle handled fairly neutral in the wet.

Three-ish month update: 1218 miles on LCI, 1106 on Pre-LCI

Driving the LCI around for a while, I found the M-Sport steering wheel much more enjoyable to use, due to its slighter thicker diameter. I sought out another M-Sport wheel but found that the wheels were too expensive or below the condition of my pre-lci sport wheel. I did find a flat bottom remanufactured wheel on eBay from Ukraine and got a great deal on it from "make offer". It took about 6 weeks to arrive. I put it on the LCI and swapped the M-Sport on to the pre-lci. It was easier than anticipated and took about 30 minutes for both wheels. One thing to note, battery disconnect is required for the air bag. The pre-LCI has a manual trunk key hole but I couldn't find one on the LCI. Of course I closed the trunk on the LCI since I needed that wheel first. The only way I got the trunk open was to have my kid climb through the backseat passthrough (because I certainly couldn't) and pull the emergency glow-in-the-dark trunk release.

Now on to the next project x2. I'm going to try to keep both cars as CA SMOG legal as possible so with that in mind, what should I do next? Exhaust? Brakes? Other?

Thanks!

Side note, BMW did a great job on the e90 LCI M-Sport. Side by side, the pre-LCI looks like a whole different generation.

Just sell it and use the money you get to buy a different car and turn it into a track monster

I like that idea. After my first track event, I looked at a few other cars (e36/e46 M3, e82 135i, BRZ/FRS/86... etc) but didn't find any that I would have had to put more money into. I figured I'd get ~7-8k for the 2007. I know a lot of AutoX folks like the Miata for the track but I don't like it more than what I have now. What car would you recommend?

For a budget of around $7-8k there are some descent options. It depends though you looking to stay Euro, go import, muscle car? Also what's the main function of the car? Track or drag?

Track for sure. I have no preference on where the car was made, as long as it's made well, light weight and I can take my kids in it in a pinch.

Hope everyone is doing well. Did some work on the wife's F31. Had the M-performance rep front lip sitting in the garage for a while and finally put it on, as well as the side skirt extensions. Got some 403m wheels and threw on some 10/15mm spacers. Debating if I can lower it an inch in the front and 1/2" in the rear. I'll probably head over to the F30 forums to see what they recommend.

Definitely worth it to have a second car. Glad to see you kept it! I wouldn't sell it for a different one after putting all that work in. How much did you end up getting that wheel from the Ukraine from?

It was $269 shipped. It's held up nicely over the year or so I've had it.

Two year update:

Well, a lot has happened in the world since I bought the car but I didn't do much to the cars at all, including drive them. I put 16k miles (9.3k on the pre-LCI and 6.7k on the LCI) between the two of them over the course of two years and didn't get to track them either since they demolished the parking lot where autox was held. Maybe I'll start going to actual tracks and see how I fare with my AWD boat.

As for mods, I think the most work went into my wife's wagon. I did, however, add black kidney grills on the LCI. haha. See you guys around!

Well, time to feel old. My daughter just drove off to school in the car. She says there's only one other car she knows of that has a manual transmission. Even the "tuners" have the automatics. I think I have a car enthusiast on my hands! (well, my boys are way more into cars but they are a few years away from driving).

Anyway, the car has been solid after all the suspension and brake work so I'm glad to see it passed down in the family.

As for the LCI? I'm using it to follow my daughter to school. Obviously. I've only put ~16k miles on it in almost four years.

Well, couldn't leave 'well enough' alone.

My LCI felt lonely in the garage now that my daughter parks in the driveway. (She's still a new driver and I don't want her whacking my car, haha)

So I went out and got me my "retirement" car. I'm not eligible to retire for some decades but I figure with all the new regulations coming down the pipe and EV's taking over, it was time.
