2A7C and 3100 Codes

Heys guys,
I been searching threads all day yesterday but still cannot seem to find the exact problem similar to mine. I got a Half Engine light the other day after going WOT. Read the codes with JB4 and came up with these:

"2A7C" - No description found
"3100 - Low boost mode engaged - CEL trigerred"

Pulled over to restart the car hoping that will fix the issue but no luck. Eventually it went away after about 3 restars and I drove home without going WOT and being easy on the gas pedal and half engine light has not come back on the way home. I read about the vanos possibility but it's a slightly different code (2A87). Not much info on the 2A7C code at all. Anyone had same issue at all? Appreciate the input guys!

I had this same issue last week...had this code along with some others. After searching the forums for a while I found someone else with a similar issue and there culprit was the oil. Either dirty oil or the wrong weight oil was used. I'm not sure if this could be your issue but I changed my oil and I haven't gotten any codes.

Hmm..I am due for an oil change as well. I'll start with that. Thanks for your input Jettin, I don't want to start replacing vanos if they are working fine.

I have a very similar situation to yours, and I was wondering what ever happened long-term? I got that dreaded 'half power' error a few days ago shortly after starting the car. After that 1 incident that has started and run perfectly normal every since. I pulled my error codes this morning, and sure enough the two most recent are 2A7C and 3100. I am due for an oil change in a few hundred miles, so I am hoping this is related.

Did the oil change help? Any signs and or symptoms associated with this? Thanks!

Unfortunately, the oil change did not seem to solve the problem. It happened again about 2 months after I had my oil changed. I'm going to attempt cleaning the VANOS solenoids (using the DIY below), as this seems to be a common cause of this same issue:

Thanks for the reply. I got the same codes after the car sat for an hour then started and got half power etc....

I changed oil and filter today. Went with German castrol 0-30w.

I plan to replace the solenoids this week. I just purchased the car and have updated injectors, coils, plugs, and performed walnut blast. Hoping to get a bit of performance from the solenoids as they seem to be gunked up.

Best of luck. Keep me updated!

in on this thread,

just got the exact same codes when reading through INPA
I guess I should do an oil change before heading for a 300km trip....

EDIT:
I actually got 2A87 and 3100
I just got the car a few days ago, cleared the codes and will check if they come back
still doing an oil change ASAP

Did cleaning/swaping the Vanos solenoids clear the 2A7C codes for you guys? I have freshly changed oil and occasionally get this code (same sort of symptoms. Drive car, park for a bit and then go to drive again in an hour or so and code+ limp mode).

Thumbs up 2A7C on my 2011 328

Hi there, - came across this thread after Check Engine wen off with 2A7C.
After a couple of days of dealing with shaky start and subsequent code, I decided to double-check VANOS solenoid connectors, - I was doing valve cover
three days before.

Well, it turned out the connectors were crossed (these two actually the only ones you can make a mistake on, out of the entire car).
Aftre swapping connectors and clearing the code, the car runs fine!

I'm having the exact same issue - 2A7C after changing a valve cover gasket. But I didn't disconnecting the Vanos solenoid connectors at the front of the engine because they weren't in the way. Or are you talking about the connectors in the harness running along side the passenger side of the engine?

Did either of you guys figure this out?

I swapped my valve cover gasket to try to fix some smoking in the engine bay, got these:

29F3 Faulty Low Fuel Pressure Sensor
2A87 Outlet-Vanos variable cam control test, mechanics
3100 low boost mode engaged -- CEL displayed

Cleaned the VANOS solenoids to try to fix, swapped intake and exhaust to see if the one was faulty.

Now after that the car went into serious limp (and ran like a tractor) mode and the codes got quite a bit worse:

29F3 Faulty Low Fuel Pressure Sensor
29CD Misfirings, cylinder 1
29D1 Misfirings, cylinder 5
29D0 Misfirings, cylinder 4
2A7C No Description Found
0000 Unknown Fault
0000 Unknown Fault
3100 low boost mode engaged -- CEL displayed

Next steps are to change the oil, new solenoids, replace that sensor and hope.

I rarely see this mentioned, but if you are getting VANOS related trouble codes and cleaning/swapping VANOS solenoids doesn't resolve it, you might want to remove and inspect the VANOS oil supply non-return valves with filter screens. I've seen several of these on youtube that were almost completely plugged up with oil sludge. Google or search youtube for [vanos non-return valve] for more info.
