Unhappy No power from N47 320D

First of all I hope this is in the right section. I've not posted here before and couldn't see an N47 section so I've gone with turbo diesel!

Ok, this is a long story so I'm going to condense it as much as possible.

Symptoms
  • Car takes a few attempts of cranking before starting from cold.
  • Once started the car has absolutely no power, won't rev past 2k RPM, stalls attempting to change to second and stinks of diesel.
  • Car is only presenting code P14A1, Exhaust back pressure sensor

What I've done so far
  • This all began after completing EGR & swirl flap delete. Car was running fine but a high mileage recent purchase, and so I wanted to do some maitenance. Since putting everything back together, these symptoms have appeared and the car has not been back on the road.
  • I initially suspected the DPF might have been the issue given the back pressure codes and the light had been on previously. I removed the DPF from the car, cleaned with a pressure washer for over an hour and replaced. Symptoms remained.
  • I then assumed I may have missed something, I removed the intake manifold once again, tripple checked my work and could not find anything amiss.
  • Finally, I have replaced the MAP sensor worried I may have damaged it cleaning the intake manifold, symptoms remain the same.

I have ordered a new back pressure sensor as this seems the logical next step. However, if this doesn't fix it (and I'm not convinced it would cause my symptoms), I'm entirely at a loss.

If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it as I'm determined not to go to a garage. Any questions please ask.

Thanks for the suggestion. Nothing has changed in terms of fuel (as far as I'm aware) since this fault began so I'm not sure what I should be checking for? I suspect something is throwing the air/fuel mixture off causing the smell but I'm at a loss as to what that could be. That's what my thought process was when I changed the MAP sensor in the manifold.

I've just replaced the exhaust back pressure sensor, no difference. Still showing code '41BA Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor' and no changes to how the car runs.

So I had some progress myself on the car. Given the new sensor didn't affect the backpressure fault I did a little experiment. I ran the car with the EGR Valve blanking plate removed and the exhaust manifold effectively open, and the power loss seemingly dissapeared!

So, I assume this looks like a genuine exhaust blockage. As above, I did remove the DPF and jet wash it out. Should I assume this didn't clear it out effectively, or should I look elsewhere in the exhaust system for blockages? Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

I need to check again on ISTA. Before I cleaned out the DPF I am sure it was at something ridiculous like 2000 mbar though!

However, I will check again tomorrow and get back to you!

Hi EthanSheppard1978,

Do you have any progress? I have the exact same issue on my car E91 320D with the N47 motor. I am getting various fault codes and I am considering to replace the exhaust gas back pressure sensor (part number 13627805152). I am measuring up to 1000 mbar :-/ However, this will maybe not solve the issue since you replaced it and did not see any difference. I am considering a clean of my DPF.

These are the fault codes I have seen:
P14A1 BMW Code - Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Sensor Short Circuit To Positive
41BA Exhaust backpressure sensor
480A Pariculate-filter system
481A Pariculate-filter system
4D00 Exhaust backpressure sensor, signal
4010 Exhaust backpressure sensor before particular filter, signal
4530 Charge-Air Pressure control, control deviation
4507 Exhaust-gas recirculation, control deviation

I have also cleaned the MAP sensor. And I have checked for vacuum leakages.

I have no idea of what do look for or test. Maybe an issues with the pressure converter (part number 11747805391).

Any good suggestions?

Firstlly, thank you for making a video showing your work. I hope it helps someone in the future.

I am sorry for my very slow repsonse, however I have been out the country for a few months. I am back now and determined to fix my issues! Sadly, I believe we're experiencing different issues. It appears you still have your EGR, yes? Mine is deleted, along with the pressure connverter as I believe this is no longer required after an EGR delet (Although I will check this!).

I am going to open another thread with regards to my current issue as I believe it may be down to the map on my car. Thanks for your help though!
