PCV Valve/Block Filter Clogged

Hello All,

I was getting ready to replace my valve cover gasket today until I removed the cover on top of the engine and found oil all over around my oil fill cap, and oil that had traveled from the oil fill cap down into the coil/spark plug area and was running down the side of the block onto the manifold. I talked with one of my mechanic friends, and he said that the block filter (correct term?) which is near the PCV valve may be clogged. Has anyone heard of this happening? IMO the oil cap is just bad as I have never heard of this "block filter" thing before. The vehicle is a 328xi with 58k.

Thanks!

Yes, ended up being the eccentric shaft actuator seal that was leaking.

My symptoms at the time were oil loss, and when I went to replace the valve cover gasket, discovered the other leak I mentioned.

I don't know about your specific whistle, but the only whistle I have ever had came around 2000-2500 RPM, and ended up being a bad oil filter. I was using Bosch filters at the time before switching to OE BMW, but there was a distinct whistle and a vibration coming from the oil filter.
