Creaking/crackling noise from back of interior
I hear this noise every time the chassis flexes (bumps, dips, turns...). On another thread somebody, afflicted with the same problem, suggested placing felt tape between the plastic and metal that meet just inside the rear window. Can somebody give me instructions on how to do this? The Motor Trend long-term M3 had the same problem. And just like the editor of that article, I have a love-hate with my car because of this. So anyways, do I have to take the rear shelf off to put the felt tape in? Many thanks.

I have this same noise. I am going to ask my dealer to fix it and see what they say.

If you have a sedan it might also be the rear door seals. mine just started creaking again. just need to condition them a lil and it goes away.

for me it started when it got mad cold aka the winter, so i figure when it gets warm we'll see if its still there. When them temp hit high 30's it went away. Now that its back down to the 'teens and wind chills in the negatives, it came back. Besides, I hardly drive without the radio on anyways.

I have the same noise. Let us know what the dealer says and how they fixed it. I might want to take mine in too.

Mine only does it when it's very cold out, and the car has been sitting for a while.

After reading this post a week or so ago, I had a similar sound after gassing up tonight. We had snow here today and my wallet was in the trunk. I believe the sounds is from the ice that feel in between the trunk lid and the depressed steel area around the rubber seal.
Not sure if this could also be your issue, just throwing it out there!

Rear shelf... DIY here on fixing it if you're out of warranty (or have a stubborn dealer). Mine's dead silent after having torn everything apart and going nuts with the self-stick felt padding. Also get some Meguire's rubber treatment and give all the door and window seals a good wipe-down. Quiets things nicely and makes the seals much happier.

I've given up on trying to fix it. My car sounds like a tin can in cold weather. Get some Wurth's rubber care to lubricate the door seals, that helps a little.
