What's the best lowering setup for retaining ride quality?

I used to have a 335i that i swapped the stock suspension out for Bilstein B8 shocks and H&R sport springs. sure it looked good, but the ride was wayyyy to harsh. I ultimately changed to KW coilovers and the ride was much more compliant. I now have a cheaper beater e91 and the factory suspension is on its way out. I want to replace it with something that isn't as pricy as a set of coilovers, but also don't want to deal with a harsh ride.

Other than just going with OEM again, are there any good options? Was thinking about trying Koni shocks with Eibach springs for a slightly lower ride, but only if it will feel as compliant as the factory setup.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I went with B4's and H&R sport springs.. lower an inch and change.. firmer but I don't need a back adjustment after driving through out town.

I think Koni/Eibach would be a good combo.
Or get B4 Sport shocks with Eibachs.
H&R springs seem to have reputation for harshness from what I've read on the interwebs regardless of application (e.g. Audi owners comment on the same).
I went with ST X coilovers for my E91. Still in the process of re-assembling the car, so can't comment on them yet.

Thank you both for the reply. Are the B4 shocks capable of running lowering springs? I read online that lowering springs should be used with the b8 shocks or at the very least the b6 shocks.

Ah yes, good catch. At least B6 should be used.
I think B4s would be more comfy, but won't last as long given the mismatch.

That's what I was thinking, but the b6 and b8 are probably harsher than the Koni shocks?

I had koni’s with tein s tech springs on my old e90 and the ride was phenomenal. It rode better than stock while having less body roll and pitch. I used e30 perches in the front for a little more ride height which put it roughly flush wheel to fender with 3/8” reverse rake. Perfect comfy setup but definitely not a stiff setup

Great to know, thanks! It seems like Koni's are more comfortable than Bilstein which is my number one priority

Compared to 1st generation runflat suspension, massive ride improvement.

Stock suspension isn't what I call rock 'n' roll - pump up the camber to -2.5° all paws, enjoy limitless, utterly linear grip w/right tires. PS4S is excellent.

Here's mine

I changed out the runflats since they are like riding on bricks. Seems like koni yellow shocks and eibach prokit springs are the best way to retain comfort with a minor drop without spending a fortune.

Yes, Koni+Eibach will be good.
I had Koni FSD + Eibach on my Audi Avant befire and it was an excellent setup. Comfy and sporty.

I'm considering doing this next time I have my struts out. Roughly how much ride height did you gain?

Were there any issues using the E30 spring perches? And did you use the std 3mm spring pad or the 9mm spring pad?

The e30 and e90 spring perches are interchangeable. e30 guys use the e90 perches to drop the front slightly on the e30 due to the low rear arches on the later cars giving them a reverse rake look when they're lowered. The e90 'drop hats' fix that.

Lowering perches don't work on the xi right?

Swift makes vey good springs. I want stiffer springs without lowering the car anymore than 10mm. So I am going to ask Swift to make me a custom set of springs. Then Hotchkis sway bars and a set of adjustable shocks. And ones that can be adjusted in the rear by running adjustment cables into the trunk.

I would highly recommend it. I used the 9mm pads too and gained a total of 19mm. Most springs, especially tein and Swift, are WAY too low out of the box and this will fix that.

If I remember correctly Swift springs have a higher spring rate than the rest of the lowering springs offered for an E90. You can run E30 pads if you don't want the drop to be too much. Pair that up with some Koni Yellows and you'll be pretty set for a street setup for around $1000.

Am I correct in saying that the Koni Yellows are not easily adjustable?

Probably not when they are on the car with the wheels on, but seems pretty straightforward

Fronts are very easy. Rears have to be off the car, which isn't a huge task. (except for the $#@% trunk liner)

I’ve got some brand new koni yellows for sale if anyone’s interested! I ended up ordering some KW street comfort coils after I bought these
