Then this thread is not for you

No one is forcing you to answer it. If you want a place to say that, then you can always make a thread called "can you support your "family/ies" or yourself"

Some ppl here can't cause some are students.

There's doctors here (I'm one). I think there's a few more over in the M3 forum though.

Since most of us graduate and start making money later (usually after residency), and have debts to pay (unless someone else paid for your schooling), we're not all that far ahead... Compound interest will not have as much time to take effect...

A lot of doctors do think they're rich though, and spend a lot of money...

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the pay or hours of residency, but I guess making 50-60k for a couple years with minimal expenses won't be too bad... day trading is where it's at anyway

Haha, I actually read an article how doctors have the least amount of savings for the amount of income they make due to higher expenses and ridiculous spending/living standards.

It does suck not making any decent money until your late 20's, I know a lot of people in their mid 20's already earning some nice cash and living pretty lavish lifestyles.... but it's not the money we were after anyway... right?

Debt is another story on it's own... I paid international student tuition fees... and rotating in Chicago I will be paying extra for my rotations as well.... easily over 100k a year in schooling expenses so that doesn't help out my overall situation either.

I'm guessing you've completed residency and are a practicing physician? If you don't mind me asking what did you end up specializing in?

I thought the medical student debt in Canada wasn't as much? In the US, they rack up 200-250k EASILY!

Yup, that's what I heard too.

I'm apparently not very spend-y, according to my financial advisor (whose clients are just doctors). Huh?? I thought I wasted a lot of my money! Heck, I bought a 335i when I could have kept driving my dependable TSX to the ground. But I forgive myself, I'm a girl who likes cars. But she said "No.... most doctors spend a lot more than you...."

Public health medicine: Communicable disease control, environmental health, and the other half of my job is management. I also do a little teaching as part-time faculty.

So, what year are you in medicine? Do you have an idea what you'd like to do later? You're doing rotations in Chicago? That's cool, I heard Chicago's a great place, it's good to get varied experience.

Best of luck in your studies!

No, it's not as bad, but it can run 6 figures. But once you graduate, yes, you can slay that debt pretty quick.... as long as you don't start buying very expensive houses and cars and whatnot right away....

Most doctors are "incestuous"....they marry their own kind And then with $1M household income (once you specialize)....it's a little bit hard not to buy that house on Bayview and the cottage and the toys. And you're right: my landlord who is a hotshot mortgage broker himself says his doctor clients are the ones with less cash flow than his other clients with a household income of $100,000. Go figure.

But I know that they're in school till 30 or more....that's the toughest part for me.

The trick is to have more "liquid cash" flow and at the lowest tax bracket.

I'm a lowly programmer by paper ... if you can even consider playing with with menus and configuration programming.

I bought my car usings the proceeds of flipping a few properties short term.
