What's the new turbo hotness?

My rear stocker is dying, and it's about time to go from FBO to a kit, probably a single. Right now, I'm looking at the DR700 DocRace bottom mount kit with a 5862 - it's the right combo of affordable and still a daily drivable.

E92 coupe, auto, 150k or so.

What are you guys driving?

I have no first hand experience....but from everything I have read, DocRace single turbo kits are about the beat mix of price/performance you can get. There are many more "high end" kits out there....but you really pay for them. It just depends on what you want I guess.

If I was going to go with bigger twins....I would be tempted to check out the new Frankenturbo 18t's for $1,900. Maybe not as good as the RB's or Pures....but half the price.

I have seen lots of mixed reviews on the cheap $900 sets of 17t and 19t's on ebay. They are cheap for a reason...

I’d avoid frankenturbo personally he had a pretty poor reputation in the VAG world

I’d either go ST or RB i have been tempted to try out pure 600’s though the price is tempting and i know pure stands by their products

I just wish the ST kits weren't so much expensive..hard to swallow a 4$k+ turbo kit for a car that's not worth much more than $6-$8k. That's money that you're never going to get back. One of the nice twin turbo list for $2k is much more appealing.

The new docrace is around $3700 not that much cheaper but is under 4k

Idk about in your area but unless youre talking auto sedans theyre going for more where i am. You could also make some money back racing lol
There is also parting out i dont see why a used kit would lose that much value.
Twins reliability has always been a large concern for me

If you want to stay twin, get you a set of china turbos off ebay. Many people are having good luck with them and they are not much different from most other companies selling twins.

If you go single you have a lot of options. If you want the best kit, go with Motiv. If you want the cheapest kit then I think finding some ON3 or JP Workz kit will do. If you want the best bang for your buck go with Speedtech. If you want to burn o2 sensors go with Doc race.

I purchased this kit with the 6266: https://www.jpworkz.com/p/n54-v-band-bottom-mount-kit

Ordered it 2 weeks ago and he's working on the exhaust manifold right now so I haven't seen anything yet, but he's going to shoot me pics of the manifold once it's been completed.

Go single and never look back, i tried different setups and i regret not going ST from the beginning.
DOC or speedtech is the proper way to do it, ECS offers a nice kit also.

i tried the Chinese 17t and they worked fine for me, hell they are still rocking on my friends car. 25k km's with zero issues, BUT, didn't like them power wise. i made 579hp.

Speedtech kit is $100 less than the docrace kit and keeps the oem engine bay look. Their customer service is top notch, I ran their kit in my old E92 for 20k+ miles.

I'd rather think of it as 'how else could I get a 6-800hp car for $10-12k'

I've been following a few FB groups related to those ebay 17t and 19t turbos for the N54's. Honestly, it really seems like they are hit or miss. Some guys are at 20k miles on them with no issues......other guys are having them fail at 200 miles. Really poor quality control on materials and assembly. Sure, there are upgrades and better parts you can put in them....if you want to invest the time and money to do it.

You can have a single turbo kit with a 6266 for $2,999

Docrace is the only single turbo kit that burns through O2 sensors?

I will believe that when you post up a link to it.........if it's that cheap, it's got to be missing a lot of stuff. I'm pretty sure the turbo alone costs $2k.

Doesn't look like that kit comes with the inlet piping does it?? So you have to fab that up on your own? What about outlet piping.....don't see that on their either. How is boost controlled? Doesn't look like it has a mac valve or any other way to control boost.

Looks like for $2,999....you still need more parts to make it all work.

It comes with everything. The air filter mounts right on the turbo just how they do on the top mounts do. You can always fab a inlet pipe or buy one, but filter on the turbo works just fine. Just saying that I was going to get twins, but came across this JPWerks kit and the guy had been texting me for a couple days before I pulled the trigger on it answering all my questions. He's about 100 miles away from me so when I pick up the kit I will post something on it. I just changed my mind on going with twins and I'm kinda happy I found a budget kit. Looking forward to making 700whp!

I would think for Daily Driving a set of up graded Twins would be the route you want to go. Look into RB 2+. They can handle 575hp rather easily. I think RB does under rate his turbos, not that this is a bad thing.

IMO - going to a single turbo and trying to reach 650-750hp is for cars that are tracked.

Just my two cents

Same setup I want to run. People have reported good spool with that turbo. The Speed Tech kit looks good as well.

You will have to post up a review when it's all said and done. Do you have any instructions or tech sheets on everything that it comes with? More info would be great....if it really does come with everything you need, that's a really good price.
