E91 320d - performance mods

Hey all,

I have an E91 320d which I use as my daily. I've only had it a few weeks but I'm wanting to look in to some mild performance mods. In my mind I've got the idea for a remap, down-pipe de-cat, EGR delete, and a new intercooler.

Doing the above, what do you guys reckon I'd be looking at for total gains and rough cost?

Cheers,
TG

Don't remove the emissions stuff...please. You can get decent gains from a good remap (BWchiptune), and leave the emissions controls in place so we can all breathe. Also bear in mind the MOT requirements on dpf cars nowadays; any sign of tampering with the dpf system is an automatic fail, as is any visible smoke at any RPM.

Don't expect any performance gain, except on the hottest days, from an intercooler... Also it might lose you some power on cold days. Just not worth it in my opinion, unless you're pushing huge boost.

Sorry for being a bit of a downer! But I do think you can save yourself a bit of money, save the planet a bit, and still have a good time.

Yep, no need for an IC upgrade at this level.
A decat and EGR delete really makes them alot perkier!!.

This along with a remap you should see around 200bhp maybe a tad more.
Anyone who claims much over 200 from just a remap is dreaming IMHO.

The N47s maybe but not the M47 engined e9*s

Be careful though, the Mitsubishi Turbos are a Bit weak when pushed hard. I wouldn't run much more boost than 1.6 bar if you want reliability.

As has been said, dont bother removing the dpf and egr as theres no need. Just spend £400-£500 on a proper remap from someone like BWchiptune. The egr can be programmed to stay closed all the time thus eliminating the need to remove / blank it while not effecting dpf regens. The car will be put on the dyno checked and run up to give you the stock figures. Then it'll be ECU out and a bespoke map written on to it before going back on the dyno and run up again. If any tweaks need to be made then then they will be until the tuner is 100% happy with the results. Then get your final print out, be amazed by the improvements and then go and enjoy!
By far and away you'll get the biggest bang for your buck by getting it remapped and you'll easily see upwards of 200bhp.

Thanks for the input guys. Just for info, it's the non-DPF M47 engine, with 163hp stock. I'll skip the downpipe decat and intercooler, as you say to save some money, and focus on the remap. Is a custom map really worth the premium over a fairly generic E9x remap?

please go to one of the best either ecotune or bwchiptune,,and yes a custom data logged tune on a gyno is the onky way to go,,they will give you stock runs/diagnostics etc etc,,at your own risk when you go to tuners who have little knowledge

Okay, I'll do my research before choosing a mapper. Thanks!

As you have the M47 engine, the first thing I would do would be to remove the swirl flaps and fit blanking plates as these have a habit of falling to bits and then dropping in to the cylinders. It was the first thing I did when we got the mrs 120d with the m47 engine. You wont notice any difference in performance.

That's on my list of preventative maintenance jobs (as is the expansion tank).

You could look into quantum tuning, I have had one of their maps on my 35i for a few years now with no related issues.

They give figures of 220bhp & 440nm of torque for a 320d.

Thanks, I'll have a look at them.

Any idea if a mileage of 95k would be an issue for a remap?

It shouldn't be an issue, if the engine is running well. But it is probably another vote for a custom tune.

95k should be fine, mine was around 83k when I had the remap done. I did have two coils fail after remapping so I changed all of them.
Quantum state quoted performance gains cannot be guaranteed on vehicles with more than 120k.
There are plenty of mapping companies out there, probably too many but I suspect like yourself did plenty of research, one place quoted a remapped bhp of 380.
Quantum had one of the lower bhp claims with a 45bhp gain but I decided I wanted the 35i to be as reliable as a 35i can be & it is pretty good for reliability, it’s now on 116k.
Quantum have over a 1000 dealers in 83 countries & give a 30 day warranty.
It just depends on how much you want to spend & what you want from your remap.
Obviously there are advantages in having the car on a rolling road whilst remapping.
With mine the guy came to my house, read the ecu & uploaded it to Quantum’s ‘file writing team’ who then ‘custom’ rewrite it. For me it was convenient & inexpensive at £250.

“Best tuner in the country” that’s quite a claim. I take it that you’ve owned/driven cars that have been mapped by many different tuners then...or else how would you know?

So BW turn off/map out the egr leaving it intact, so do quantum & I suspect other reputable tuners also do the same.
