Mechanic recommended a "top end service" due to carbon buildup. Anyone heard of that

I thought the N54 was the one prone to that. I did some googling and couldn't find anyone talking about it for an N52.

Correct, he may be mixing it up with N54/N55. N52 DOES NOT require walnut blasting (due to it having port injection)
