Apollo 11
Launched 50 years ago, landed on the moon July 20 1969. I remember it well, straining to make out the images on the tv and understand the voices, with my parents so excited for the accomplishment. And the anxiety when the spacecraft and astronauts were behind the moon.
Amazing accomplishment at an incredible pace from Kennedy’s challenge to the walk and return. |

I was too young to remember, but was it full then when they launched? Seems almost like a plan that it's full 50 years later.

I remember the whole thing like it was yesterday, standing around the secret sound stage in Arizona watching Neil and Buzz pretend that they were on the moon.
In case anyone is interested, BBC America is airing a special replay Saturday night.....

It was well before I was born (although I do vividly remember watching, in person, the Challenger Disaster when I was in elementary school).
Irrespective of that, the moon landings were nothing short of amazing. I read somewhere recently, that several people calculated the distance to the moon, technology at the time, human knowledge, danger, risk, and other variables and determined that an equal comparison would have been Columbus sailing across the Atlantic in the 1400's with a crew of 3 on a row boat that was 8ft long and contained no sails. That was the odds of success and survival. Blows the mind.

Well - I would say that Mueller was directly responsible for making it possible - not so sure I would say that a politician 'made it possible'.
NASA estimated that it had taken more than 400,000 engineers, scientists and technicians to accomplish the moon landings - reflecting the vast number of systems and subsystems needed to send men there. Those are the real people to thank and those are who really made it possible. Amazing accomplishment by all!

July 20 1969 was an amazing time in US History. Wish I was old enough to see it all happen, but I was just an 8 day old newborn while that historic event was unfolding.

I vaguely remember watching it on TV. Those guys had serious balls, though. Very little if any Plan B's. If something failed, you were screwed. Still, to have walked on the moon...
Can't. Top. That.
