BMW Twin Power Turbo 5W-30

what's the story with official bmw oil btw!!??
i saw loads of people while ago were using Mobil 1 instead claiming it's better (I doubt they have any proof or reason to know it btw) and many other were with castrol and bunch of other brands, but I rarely came across with someone using BMW oil somewhat...

but I am just curious why people are using alternatives oils when this is the bmw recommended oil tho.

I am too on Mobil 1 some time back my mechanic recommended it, so I sticked with it, but I am somewhat thinking to go back to BMW, and was curious what do you have to say on that

BMW specifies a synthetic oil that essentially meets ACEA A3/B3-4. Most people like Mobil 1 0W-40, because it is cheap and easily available. As an alternative to BMW's Castrol product, it's superior when hot. And it's not Castrol.

Some people claim that neither of those oils, based upon Group III synthetic oil, isn't truely synthetic. So many of them choose an oil that is based upon a Group IV (polyalphaolefin) because they're "better".

There are many LL-01 and other BMW-approved oils. Take your pick.

M57's call for an LL-04 oil and it has been very hard to find in the states because there just aren't a lot of Diesels in America if you look there are a lot of Acceptable oils. I've tried a few and found Mobil 1 makes my 335d sound like a tractor and I just changed to Pennzoil Platinum Euro which actually has the LL-04 on the label....So far it's been great and the price is perfect at about $22.00 per 5 liters. That makes your oil changes for less then $60.00.

I just use Shell Rotella T6. Pretty good oil all around.

I recommend rotella t6 on deleted m57 only. I believe its been discussed on here which oils to choose. If you have emissions intact you need a LOW SOOT oil. There are some oils that meet these standards, but rotella t6 is not one of them. Me personally I use rotella t6 on my deleted 335d and the bmw twin turbo power 5w 30 on my x5d with emissions intact.

We use Rotella T6 on the Kenworth trucks we service at the dealership I work for and they all have emissions in tact and it exceeds API CK-4. What is the recommendation for BMW M57 engine with emissions in place?

The Rotella T6 is low ash <=1% where BMW spec is ash <=0.8%. BTW, Mobil 1 ESP is <=0.6% ash. I think the T6 can be used in a BMW diesel if your engine does not burn oil.

What also needs to be considered, the oil volatility as the engine breathe oil fumes. I do not have much info on this subject but remember seeing that the Mobil 1 has the lowest volatility. Only drawback of Mobil 1 ESP is the price.

I don't think it has any data on the BMW oil specifically, but https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/ is a great source of test data on various engine oils.
