Polar bears scavange quite a bit, so I can say with confidence that they only enter the equation after you have already been killed. So I wouldn't worry about the getting eaten because you would already be dead.

So to recap - If you exceed 1% everyone in your car will die first in a firey explosion and then what reamining bits are left will be eaten by polar bears.

Are you sure? I mean, look what happened to this dude when he tried putting staggered wheels on his Bronco:

Great photos, Lassaxi! Maybe there's no final shot because the bear went after the photographer?

I know that topic has been beaten to death and I know that I won't be attacked by polar bears.. but I have 2 questions.

1. Will running a staggered setup on an xi change the oversteer/understeer of the car?

2. If I get this now, and we get a snowstorm before winters end, is my traction going to suck more than with a square setup..?

I like the way the staggered setup looks, but I'm going to take function over form..

1) staggered has more understeer

2) traction is more like snow tires. If it's snow tires you'll still have traction, BUT (from what i understand)you swirve slightly, since the rear wheels is bigger, it'll try to follow the tracks

why not just have 2 different set ups? Unless your current set up is worn and don't wanna buy winter tires again.

I've pretty much settled on getting snows for next year. After bending the stock 17's this winter, I don't want to risk the 18's or 19's I will be riding around on this summer! However, the weather is unpredictable and I don't want to get caught in a April/November snowstorm with a staggered setup if the handling sucks.

I also worry about understeer in general because I like the handling of the car square, and don't want to wreck that so it can look a little cooler.

well how about this. Since you want to stay square set up, why not buy square set up anyways. But add spacers to the rear when once winter is over, that way you can still have the staggered look/feel, and not worry about winters. I believe you can do up to 10mm in the rear without requiring extended bolts (but double check with the vendor). Either way if you do staggered you'll get more understeer than square, but at least this way i think it's a good compromise

^^ This is what I did and I'm happy with the results. I can't detect much understeer but then I don't track my car. I would recommend going with extended lugs with spacers regardless of size.

I'm running a staggered set of 18's (162's) on my xi.
No problem - it's the sport package option for your car.
Ditch the run-flats.

I ran into an understear issue like another poster mentioned.
tire pressure adjustment took care of it.

I keep the stock set for snows in the winter.

Yeah I'm going to think about this. I originally decided I might have to go staggered just because some of the rims I wanted only came staggered. I'm tired of the stiff ride with the runflats, especially worse during the winter. Plus the ABS comes on nearly every stop in the snow. I am not impressed.

In the summer I had no issues besides the harsh ride.

How does offset come into play when you are looking into the staggered setup? For instance if I am looking at 18/8 and 18/8.5 in the rear both have a 35m offset. I was going to buy the standard tire size recommended by bmw but the offset in the back is 2mm different than the stock 18" tire. How will this affect my tire choice?

PS. Polar bears rock!! awesome pics....I think those made my day!

Thanks for the help.

Great information guys, thanks. I have a question...

Like another member, I am in the same situation...

I'm going to get a set of OEM 197s shortly, anybody have issues with these tire sizes?

Stock: 205/55/16
Front: 225/40/18 - 0.84% diameter difference
Rear: 255/35/18 - 0.6% diameter difference

The offset for the 16" stocks are 34 around and for the 18"front there 37 and 34 in the rear. Is the difference in the offset in the rear going to be an issue? Sorry, I'm a newbie....

Tire size has nothing to do with offset, it has to do with the diameter and width of the wheel. I run 235/40/18 on an 18x8.5 wheel and it fits perfectly.

Those look like stock tire sizes for 18" wheels so those should not be a problem.

It depends what the offsets are
