Question M57 cranks but won't start (video)

Hello everyone,

I have a 07 330xd 231hp MT which is giving me trouble. Engine cranks, but won't start.

Last week I was driving on the highway at around 100km/h in 6th gear. I switched to 4th gear, tried to rev and it just made kind of "missfires", so I pulled over until I was almost stopped that the car stalled with clutch pressed.

After that, it was impossible to start the car, it just cranks, but won't ever start.

I changed injectors 3, 4, 5 because the car had 4-6s long cranks before. I thought that might be the solution... but that changed nothing.

I primed/bleed the fuel system. Nothing. I can hear the low pressure fuel pump (LPFP) working.

No fault codes on INPA.

Here's a video:

I am also thinking... timing chain broken / snapped?

Sounds like there's no compression on one of the cylinders. Timing chain is a good candidate. If you have INPA, can you see railpressure?

No fault codes is strange. If your timing chain broke, you should crank much faster than normal. And usually there would be codes.

It's not a broken timing chain, but maybe it's skipped a tooth or 2. I think that would make sense, to have no codes too.

Nothing else I can think of makes sense for the symptoms; sudden failure, no codes, uneven cranking, no start but seems to still fire on maybe one cylinder (just).

I'd check the chains/timing ASAP.

Thanks for your replies!

There is an update: since I wasn't able to diagnose further myself, I took it to a workshop.
They testested the injectors, all were ok. They found no compression on cylinders 5 and 6.

That means engine broken... I can't explain the cause, and I don't know what's exactly broken... Sadly, I won't repair it, since it's not worth it anymore (too much to spend on a new engine).
