you sure?ive looked into this loads of times,,and their are always 2 sides...here is one Are pressed number plates legal for modern vehicles?
Guidelines for the display of number plates for vehicles registered from March 21st 2001 are detailed under British Standard BS AU 145d. As per these guidelines number plates must be made of reflective material (not retroactively made reflective by treatment). Aluminium, which traditionally makes up pressed number plates, does not meet this standard. Another standard requires the material to be flexible, and must be able to spring back to its original shape if bent. Metal plates cannot do this. These two requirements means that pressed metal number plates are effectively illegal for any modern vehicle. Last edited by rasa bmw; 07-31-2018 at 12:11 AM.. |

I've got vinyl ones front and rear, although I might re-do the rear one as there is a little crease in it. Hashtag weightsaving ah ha.

These number plates are reflective, and pass BSAU145d reflection tests; the characters are cut to the correct size and font, ie New Charles Wright. The height is 79mm and the spacing is correct as per DVLA requirements. However, these plates are NOT road legal! Why? We believe that because these number plates use to be sold in kit form in shops, it meant people could make their own plates. DVLA did not want the consumer making their own plates as the room for error was greater! Pre-September 2001 these plates were always seen as acceptable. However, since the change in legislation people have become more conscious of putting them on their car. I have written a full article about this on our forum click here to view this article Last edited by rasa bmw; 01-11-2019 at 02:22 AM.. |

I suspect that this is all to do with ANPR.
Perhaps I should not say this out loud but I worked for a company that helped with the development of the technology behind ANPR back in the early 2000's. I remember several of us driving around the car park at different speeds and angles of approach to see if the cameras could read our number plates successfully. Certainly standardised font, character spacing, specific plate height above the ground all came into force around that time to enable automatic recognition and it is too much of a coincidence not to believe this is all linked. If you stick an otherwise legal plate on your bonnet it becomes illegal because it is in the wrong place. Unless you have a very low bonnet it will be too high and it will be almost horizontal preventing a camera from seeing it. BTW Rasa there doesn't appear to be a link to your article which would make an interesting read for anyone considering non-standard number plates. |
