All the execs saying BMW doesn't want to tarnish their image with a 4 cyl diesel in the US need to take a look at the Audi A3 TDI. I've driven a newer A3 and they are extremely nice inside and handle very well. The TDI version gets over 40mpg on the regular and would be a perfect commuter car. I actually almost bought one over my 335, but it was just a bit out of my price range. Still, a fully loaded A3 TDI with the titanium sport package was only $37k. Plus it got the green car of the year award in 2009, which draws even more people in.

The only issue? You have to wait 6 months to get one because the demand for them is so high. Dealers are only allowed a certain allotment of them, so it kind of sucks that you have to wait so long.

It seems these days that car companies should worry less about their 'image' and creating a demand for a 'limited' car. Instead, focus on selling people the cars they want because if you don't, some other company will.

My 335d seems to be getting 26 mpg (all city/suburban driving; lots of red lights; trying to cut back on the quick accelerations...but it's sooo hard to do).

Still waiting for the fabled 38-40 mpg on the highways, but it's the same story. I just can't drive slow in this car. -sigh-

I don't see how that's unimpressive. Keep in mind, your 26 mpg running pure city is equivalent to the best that other cars in this performance category can muster running highway. I'm currently running about 75% city and 25% highway and I still see 28mpg - or 1 mpg better than my old, much slwoer 328xi could manage driving 90% highway.

I timed its 60-100mph at roughly 11 seconds. That's only a second or so shy of a 330i. Considering it can get mileage equal to or better than a Prius, I'd say that's pretty damn fast.

I think we'll see those 2.0 liter diesel engines in North America in a few years. It would be the best way for BMW (and the other EU car companies) to meet the new milage laws by 2016.

So maybe my next BMW will be a diesel (or an M3).

What would tick me off is the fact that the fuel is 25 cents more per gallon where I live, than super. I don't like paying more for less so to speak. The Golf TDI sounds like good value, if it weren't for the high price of the car, and the fuel. Mathematics is not on the side of hybrids nor diesels. But there is a price to be paid in order to make a statement.

Wow, but I ready knew high pressure diesel is the future of the auto industry. Oh, diesel produces less CO2 then gas on top of all this and costs less and is more easy to refine then gas. Add in B5 and your off to races.

320d could end up to be cheaper than accord for someone who drives alot. I could save $150-200 per month per car. I want one !!!! For my wife, of course.

Are your emissions standards designed to ban the use of diseasel in America? Because if you can't get ultra efficient EURO-V compliant engines like this, then you can't get anything.

No ban, just harder to hit (California is the main driver in regards to emissions beause they account for such a large share of US sales.). Also CO2 isn't at all considered. It's all about NOx.

At the moment only the VW/Audi 4 banger diesels are compliant in California and hence all 50 states. These 4 cyl diesels have DPF and other catalysts instead of DPF + Urea injection system like the larger 6 cyl diesels (335D for example).


My guess, BMW can't yet meet the NOx emissions without taking a big hit on power and/or they're waiting to release it with the new 3 series.

Can't believe there are people on the forum who would argue that a BMW that gets 58mpg on the freeway has no market here in the USA. The disinformation (brainwashing) in the marketing of hybrids by Toyota and Honda is powerful.

US gallon or imperial gallon; just do the math, the tank holds 16.1 US gallons. The car went 1000 miles. That's 62.11MPG, period.

BMW needs to put a big marketing push for their Diesels. I think they would sell quite well. There's a lot of anti-Prius owners who would buy this (myself included).
