Original poster and others who have done this install,

Is it absolutely necessary to drain the coolant to replace the oil canister gasket? I just had my coolant flushed and would hate to dump it and re-do.

Please let me know ASAP.

Not 100% necessary, but highly advisable - otherwise you will have spillage and you have to be careful not to cross-contaminate coolant/oil. In the original DIY I showed how to drain/save the coolant and then filter and re-use it. That was for an auto transmission. With a manual you have to remove the radiator or something - someone posted the details in one of the comments.

Pictures?

Anyone have some pictures?

Most of the pics on the DYI are gone!

My son-in-laws 2008 E90 335i N54 w/oil cooler is leaking at the housing as well and need either another write-up DYI or some pics!

Any other links you may have please list the link!

Thanks,Matt

NEVER use the forum search - it sucks. Here's a Google DIY for searching the forum:

search-terms site:e90post.com/forums

Of course, you can always type "advanced search" into google to get access to the Google advanced search page.

Cheers

Great DIY! I had one snag.

Hi, I want to say that this is great. As a father of 3 and my wife not working, write ups like these are invaluable!

All has gone well so far. I did just as described and had the appropriate tools. Except a telescoping magnet (A MUST!) I replaced the O rings and had no issue with detaching and replacing the coolant hose from the OFH. I would suggest removing the electrical plug first since it is in the way of the 10MM bolts. This helped me find the bolt thread much easier. I am now putting things back together (six hours into it) but while I was working the manifold away from the block, I accidentally snapped the plastic vacuum hose attachment from the the lower right side of the manifold. I am wondering if I am screwed into having to buy a new intake manifold and doubling my work, and expense.

Does anyone know if this is repairable? Will my car run properly or do I need to buy and replace the entire manifold?

Thanks for tolerating the novice questions, but I am hoping to get his done today. I had to miss work today for my oops and am hoping it will not take more than a day to fix or replace the manifold.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

-Dan

Here's an "add-on" DIY for those that have the OEM oil cooler system that incorporates a thermostat housing on the front of the oil filter gasket:

DIY Addendum: Oil Filter Housing Gasket with OEM Oil Cooler

FYI, I only need 6 quarts of oil and my oil level is halfway between MIN and MAX. I'm rather glad for that since I buy oil in bulk 6-packs!

I'm about to do this on my '08 (manual trans sport pkg, w/ oil cooler). DIYs like this have been invaluable, thanks to all those who've contributed!

The problem is that my leak is bad enough that I have some "milkshake" collecting on the underside of the oil cap. I think the coolant is mixing with the oil.

Question 1: how should I flush the cooling system?

I've done some searches, and some have said they flushed with a bit of dish detergent. However, I'm concerned that residual detergent left in the system might deteriorate seals and gaskets, leading to leaks down the line.

I've seen some mention of a special coolant "flush". Not sure if this is a special fluid or what... could someone who's done this chime in?

Question 2: how should I flush the engine?

I'm thinking that a couple of oil changes should be enough to get the coolant out of the engine. But BMW oil is expensive! Do I really need to use this to flush? Is flushing the engine oil really necessary?

TIA!!

In the DYI, it is recommended to do and oil change as well.
So, when you car is up. And oil is drained....draining.
Add more oil and let it flush what ever is sitting there.

Also once you have changed the OFH gasket and re-attached the coolant hose going to the OFH from the RAD.
Then keep squeezing the hose....release, squeeze...release, squeeze...release, squeeze.
Keep doing it and watch how much more coolant come out.

Our total coolant is about 8 to 8.4 liters.
I had to put 6 liters in afterwards.
So, I am happy with a 3/4 flush.

The bolt size on the 3 OFH bolts is E10. Inverted torx.
Use a proper socket.

Best of luck, I am sure, once you drain the oil, most if not all the water from the oil will be gone or evaporate.

Also, you can do an oil change again in say 3k, this time, the oil should be hot, and flow easier.

Thanks for this DIY. This took me about 6 hours to complete from setup to cleanup. I also washed the engine bay, flushed the coolant, and did an oil change. It is probably a good idea to change the coolant and oil since it is hard to tell if the two are mixing from the gasket leak. I was losing about 1/4 qt of oil every couple weeks and had all the common leak signs around the housing itself.

Question guys:

I'm going to need to make this repair on my car, but really do not want to touch the intake manifold. I was doing more researching (wanted to know the tightening order of the manifold bolts at least but also wanted to see if there were other write-ups on it), when I found this guide detailing the entire process also, but much more simply.

I really like the fact that it appears to be so simple (without touching the manifold), but I'm wondering if maybe it's too good to be true. Can anyone comment on whether the procedure listed above can be performed the same way on an '07 335i 6MT? I have a universal joint and will buy a super long extension like the one pictured if it will work (picture from step 5).
