Summer to Winter set up

I am currently running the factory staggered setup on my e92 335. 225/40/18 up front and 255/35/18 in rear. I live in Chicago and badly need to get some winter tires on there.

Can I put a square 225/40/18 tire set up on my existing wheels? I assume the rear wheels are a wider diameter. Will this work? Really didn't want to buy new wheels and am having trouble sourcing an affordable 255/35/18 winter tire for the rear. Plus, I understand a narrower tire is better in case of snow....which we get our fair share of.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That will work. The rear tire will just be a little more stretched than the front.

Yes, that will work. From multiple tire guys in the area, they recommended doing that for both price and snow. I went with the Dunlop Winter SP 4D, they have a really good deal on TireRack right now for them. Did you purchase yet? The shop that I normally purchase tires through said his wholesaler is selling them for 250 each, and tirerack currently has them for 190 each and a $60 rebate.
