I need help and advice.
I had a recall done on my car on Monday which was to do with the brakes.
Since I've had it back - the steering error light has occurred 3 times (never occurred ever before). It basically tells you their is an issue and you should stop. I have, I've then power reset it by ignition on/off. Fault then clears. I phoned BMW about it and they said to pop it in to take a look. An hour later they return explaining I need over £700 of parts to fix a few issues. Namely the Power assisted pipe for active steering at nr £600 and a couple of parts to do with the Coolant temp sensor totalling over £130. I've not noticed a difference in the car but my confidence in it has been knocked somewhat. I'm going to get a 2nd opinion from an independent and a 3rd opinion from another dealer to see if I get the same diagnosis. What would you do?

Losing count of how many people visit a dealer
and come out with expensive faults. could be my suspicious mind, but its epidemic around here...

Sounds very suspicious Paul.
Is the Dealer one you have used before? I'd take it to a good independent, one that can read fault codes and see what they say. |

Ask them for a printout of all the fault codes stored in memory. I am exceptionally dubious about the diagnosis at the moment...

I'm presuming you dont have a warranty, if so I'd find a good independent mate and get some second opinions, not sure of any in Yorkshire but if you can get over Manchester way then Darren woods in Stockport has a very good reputation. If I didn't have a warranty then my car wouldn't go anywhere near a dealers.

Yep - no warranty. It's the dealer that I use mainly as it's closest to me. As there was no charge for the recall work, I took it there because it's close.

Independant dealer - BMW specialist
Only an issue with the cooling system - sensor as BMW said - total cost of £81.36. Steering issue they said is nothing to worry about but there is evidence of misting from one of the joints.
