Distilled water
Hello, I wanted to top up the coolant so ive bought the bmw coolant £12.50 for 1.5 litres. Do i need distilled or just normal water to mix with it.

Im in a hard water area, but ive used just normal water in all of my previous cars without any problems. I think i will just use normal water as I'm only topping it up slightly, and the previous owner might of just used normal water anyway.

I use Carplan di-ionised water it's not expensive at around a pound per litre & i'd rather use that than tap water, its chalky in kent & I'd rather not have the coolant channels chalking up like the inside of my kettle

Defrost the fridge / freezer and use that if you have hard tap water.
It's not just the limescale clogging up waterways but tap water can have quite a concentration of halides in it at certain times of day. First thing in the morning my tap water tastes like a swimming pool! Alternatively, boil a kettle, let it cool and carefully pour off the water and you will find most of the nasty bits are sticking to the heating element or have been boiled off. No need to buy deionised water which is different to distilled water. Deionised will start re-ionising again when it is circulating around the engine anyway so is best reserved for topping up batteries if you find a lead acid battery that allows for refilling these days! |
