DIY: Remove / Replace Fenders / Windshield water bottle
DIY: Remove / Replace Fenders / Windshield water bottle
I thought I'd post up this DIY as I had problems finding instructions on how to remove the fenders on my E92 I replaced my stock fenders with a set of M3 fenders and decided to document the steps. It required replacing the water bottle and hose, but clearly if you don't need to do this, then skip these steps Before you start here are a few tips (keep in mind this DIY is on a RHD car) * an 8 mm and 10 mm socket and extensions are essential for this job. There are about 1000 screws, all of them either 8 mm or 10 mm * Remove the side skirts makes this job 100 times easier. I did one side with them on and the other with them off and taking them off is pretty painless so save yourself a headache and just do it * Removing the wheel liners also makes this job 100 times easier. You need to get behind it to remove the screws holding the fender in place and to unplug the indicator wires, oh and to get to the wind shield water bottle.. so once again take the time to remove the liner and work in comfort * There are three screws holding the fender to the car door frame. (DO THESE LAST) Only one can be accessed by opening the door. The other two are accessed from behind the fender. You can see what looks like spring clips when you have the door open. They are actually what the screw, screw into... dont bother trying to turn them or leverage them or whatever, its a complete waste of time. Remove the wheel lining (and water bottle) and you will be able to get to them with a socket and a couple of extensions On the drivers side, you need to slide the water bottle out of the way to be able to pull back the fender enough to give you access to the screws * Getting the front of the fender off also is a pain in the ass. You need to undo the screw attaching the fender to the front bumper (under the wheel lining) and then remove the screws that run along the top of the fender (accessible from the engine bay) once this is done, the pointy end of the fender is attached to the car body by a bracket. It can be released by sliding the fender back towards the rear of the car. So if you have removed all the screws and cant figure out why its still connected, its because of this bracket * When installing the new fender, it takes a while to get the panels all lines up. Its best to half tighten all the screws, adjust everything until you have it all lined up and then tighten everything down.... and don't forgot to slide the pointy end of the fender into the bracket when putting the fender back on. The bracket is under the screw closest to the front bumper under the bonnet/hood. If you forgot to do this, you'll end up undoing everything like i did Everyone says this is a easy job, but it took me a good day from start to finish and lots of backtracking .... Hope this helps someone out Last edited by Socket; 02-12-2017 at 07:57 AM.. |

Great write up! I've wanted to swap my fenders out as well. Didn't realize the washer reservoir would need replacing as well; but it certainly makes sense now that I think about it. I recently had to replace the washer fluid pump in mine; so I pulled the whole thing to give it a good wash out since I had everything exposed. Was replacing the hose necessary for the new reservoir, or was it just cosmetic (black hose looks nicer IMO anyways, just curious)?

New bottle only needed if going from stock to M3 rep fenders, as the M3 indicators encroach into the fender. The M3 bottle has a cut out to fit around the indicator that the stock bottle doesn't have. New hose is nice to have but not essential unless is it damaged or brittle from heat or something. The M3 hose is oval in cross section, while the stock hose is round. That means the M3 hose tends to kink when trying to fit it. Personally I think stick with the round stock hose if you can. They are both the same length and have the same connection to plug into the water bottle. Final tip is make sure you do you up the screws in the door, before fitting the water bottle otherwise you cant reach them.... Hope this helps mate |

Thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough write up.
Are these M3 "style" fenders (like the ones ECS is selling) or are these real M3 fenders? And what is the difference between the two? |
