n55 Coil packs on N54

Has anyone tried using N55 coilpacks on an N54? are they compatible, and if so are the Delphi on the n55 a better unit than the Bosch coil pack on the n54?

I never tried, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are, just check on REALOEM or you can always just call the dealer parts counter and ask, they should be able to confirm. Also I tend to stick to Bosch, since they are the OEM supplier.

Well thing is Delphi is the oem supplier for n54 and n20. Can't imagine why they would downgrade. The whole point of the n55 was to be more reliable than the n54

The whole point of the N55 was to be more inexpensive to produce than the N54 (less turbos, less cats).

Lol less expensive to produce? The turbos on the n54 are shit ancient ass journal bearing technology. I dont think they saved much money in production from n54 to n55

Yes, they did. Two pieces of "ancient" technology and all of the related pieces are way more expensive than a single turbo set-up. Plus the N55 substituted cast pieces for several forged pieces in the N54. And, btw, the N55 turbo -- though a far more advanced design -- is also journal bearing.

Lol well the n20 is a better motor than the n52 and it uses the Delphi coil packs. Im talking about coil packs not the entire engine. I have an n54... My second one in fact so obviously I prefer the n54 my question is just about coil pack selection. I cant imagine one costing significantly more than the other they are both about 50 dollars brand new. I was just curious if anyone had tried the n55 Delphi mfg coil packs in an n54. I don't really see how 'the n54 is better and more expensive to produce than an n55 so therefor every single component is better than those in the n55' is a logical argument for why one coil pack is better than another.

Hmmm my 2007 N54 had Bosch Coilpacks as OEM, possibly they changed suppliers somewhere down the line.

I saw that ngk had coils for the n54 pretty cheap. Didn't really look into it but just came across it during my searching

Over all n54s are way better than n55s, that's why the 335is and 1m still use them instead of n55..

wow, some real great bits of wisdom in here. Don't get me wrong here, i love my n54 and i think its superior to an n55 but damn some people really take any chance they can get to stroke their n54 boner.

As far as an UPGRADE goes, there is only one way to tell. Test the Delphi coil versus the Bosch and see. For empirical testing, you would need to have a high boost car with possible misfires due to lack of spark voltage especially at higher RPMs. Run one set of coils versus another and see whether either coil sparks better with wider plug gaps.

Otherwise, just leave good enough alone. Typically these cars only need a tighter plug gap or just new coils if they are getting old once you really push the envelope.

yea i mean, mine are fine, but just a curiosity. these are also the coils that you find on the f30 328 loaner cars

being more reliable saves money. Fewer warranty claims lowers costs. And all of the parts you mentioned are irrelevant to coil pack selection. i am not saying the n55 coil packs are better, just curious if anyone had tried them

Maybe I missed it... are the coils interchangeable between n54 and n55??? Does anyone know if one is better than the other? I thought that was the point of this thread and I am interested in the answer.

Just took the plunge and bought 3 Delphi coils - should be here in a week or so... Will keep posted - if I forget, please remind me.

EDIT: Actually nevermind - I'm just doing some preventive maintenance and probably will not see any improvements - If I do, however notice improvements or problems, I will post.

in my book More Reliable sometimes means "Less Fun" That being said, I would not trade my N54 for an N55 any day.

lmao love the way you said that haha but yeah the purpose of the n55 was to be cheaper for them to produce but they are a few components that are more reliable on the n55..

If you want to try something else than Bosch for coils you can always try Bougicord. Their part number 155136 is supposedly interchangeable with bosch 0221504470. Checked the google(tm) and people seem to like Bougicord stuff way over bosch.
