its near macau grand prix and usually in these times police has lots of actions against speeding + illegal modification, therefore drive safe and within normal speed ! especially in Yuen Long highway, the cops caught 30+ cars in 3 days on that highway for dangerous driving + illegal racing!

probably end of november!

and i think its like this - for e.g. 5 points were deducted on nov 16 2010, you will get your 5 points back on nov 16 2012. 3 points were deducted on nov 17 2010, you will get the 3 points back on nov 17 2012 and so on!

Wait, don't you have V1 or some other radar detector, it should have warned you, maybe these radar detectors aren't working as advertised? As I said, don't want to spend HK$4000 on a detector that dosen't work...hope that fear I have is wrong.

laser is not a continous signal wave, so no detector can give u proactive alarm. once the detector beeps, you should have already gunned (unless u are lucky enough to get the reflecting wave from the cars nearby). and that's why some other people talk about laser jammer but it is not legal to use in HK.

u just need to setup expectation right. detector helps from those pigeon boxes (orange and gray) and mobile cannon cameras but not handheld laser.

extra note for the pigeon boxes, u probably noticed there are recent new orange ones installed in most of the places. these new ones carries K-band signal and are adjusted in their signal strength so that detectors can only provide alert until you are almost running parallel to them. so far no detector is known to be able to tackle this to provide advance enough alert like they do for the old orange boxes.

Thanks for the clarification. Well in that case, even with a detector, it isn't going to help me when I was caught last week. I agree detectors can't catch 100%, but if it's not reliable in most cases and can't catch laser or the new cameras, maybe better off that I stick with my instincts then spend HK$4000, hmmmmm.

On a sidenote, the cameras can only catch traffic going away from them, that is those approaching the back of the camera, not oncoming traffic (those heading in the opposite direction-that is traffic heading towards the camera lens) correct?

yes, this is the typical way they do in HK, while handheld laser can be either beam you in front or at your back.

Thanks again. A shame about the radar detectors being totally ineffective in warning the driver, I was going to buy it tomorrow, but is now having second thoughts. Hopefully, there can be future detectors that can actually warn you of approaching radar and lasers.

I heard that these new pigeon boxes have already been swapped out due to a high rate of false alarms / pictures taken leading to heaps of public complaints. Don't quote me on this though.

I sold my V1 when they introduced the new pigeon holes, haven't bought one back yet.

yap, i also overheard they are doing some finetunings (like increase the strength etc) to rectify some issues. i am using a V1 and planning to get a new one for my another car, as it can still save me from those cannons and old boxes.

If it does increase the strength, will it make it easier to detect by v1?

The bottom line is, is it still better off in buying a radar detector (despite not always reliable) then not buying one?

it's just a pull & push game on the signal strength.

for your question, my answer is still a "yes"

a side note, i guess you should have done some research before, at least to myself V1 is the best so far for the detection distance to generate early enough (still depends on individual drivers though ) alert, but there are also other brands that also work the same way. Even some China made ones are not too bad, esp. in terms of the price vs value.

share again an earlier clip for my V1 alerts me on being "lasered"

early alerts were actually come from the drivers opposite... haha

(donno why the embedded video no longer working for me...)

Thanks. I did read some reviews for V1 or that Passport. But it's not always easy to get a full picture since the reviews always have certain bias in saying one is better then the other. It's best to get it from the end-user who actually has daily experience of it.

V1 我覺得e+仍然最好;但對o住新白鴿籠真係好遲先响
前排有人介紹一只叫 Escort Redline,睇下面你片嘅效果好似幾好。

I was driving on Tai Po Rd (Sha Tin section) and going 50-60 km (probably 61) in a 50 km zone (where the speed limit drops from 80 to 50) when the camera suddenly flash. Scared the crap out of me for a second since I thought I was far enough from it. Darn, could it be flashing me or the car in front of/behind me? It was flashing on the left side, there was a bright light and then a flash.... It's odd that it would flash since I thought I wasn't speeding excessively and I was just going at the same rate as the rest of the traffic. Darn, I hope this is one of those false alarm you mentioned otherwise it's another 3 points..wonder if I could contest it in any way?

I hope it's a malfunction then, it would be so unfair to single me out when every other car is going the same speed as me or even faster.

Yeah the problem is that I got busted in November last year, so if i get nailed, that's another 3 points, it will start adding up and I don't want to have it get to that point. There was no warning from the radar, what angers me was that I really wasn't going fast, well not excessively over the limit by any means, so it would stink if i got hit again by a ticket.

well..you must be over the speed limit to activate the camera, you may feel that you are going as the same flow as the cars in front of you..but 3-5km/h could already be the difference to trigger the shot..
