Taffic Violation

OK, here's my dilemma but I can't find out what the penalty/fine would be for doing so.

I'm going to drive to Wyoming (from Utah) and pick up a Jeep I've bought. However, I just want to get it back to Utah. I'm thinking about taking the license plate off my BMW and putting it on the Jeep just so I can get it home and not have to pay licensing fees, tax, etc.

Does anyone know what that violation is called and even better, what the penaly is in Utah if caught for doing so?

Are you going to register the Jeep in Utah ?? If so, then contact the DMV in Utah for help. I'm sure they can issue you temporary plates, so you can drive it legally from Wyoming to Utah.

dont run a plate registered to your bmw on a jeep. here in CA, the police have automatic plate scanners in their cars running at all times that displays the latest registration date along with the make and model of the vehicle to which it is registered. a little story to explain why this idea is awful:

I had a personalized plate on my e92 that I had just acquired. It was registered with the DMV to my vehicle, but not the police database, yet. I was pulled over by an officer with his gun drawn in my face because my windows were tinted and my plate showed as unregistered to my vehicle type. (he thought the car was stolen, and I dont blame him)

I really hope you didn't graduate from the University of Washington because that's a seriously retarded idea...

Contact the Utah and Wyoming department of licensing and ask about temp or trip permits. I've purchased these when restoring motorcycles and needed to ride them to the inspections. Here in Washington you can get a 3 day permit for approximately $20.
I say check with both states because I don't know if one will honor the others temp pass.

It will flag you as a possible stolen vehicle, as all reg checks return make/model.

As everyone said - get a temp tag. It should run more the $20-30, and will keep you from a potentially bigger problem.

In california you can purchase a one trip ticket from the DMV. I'd check into that.
I wouldn't sub plate a vehicle, it's a serious violation.

96 Hour In-Transit Temporary Permits
Utah Code §41-3-305

The fee is $2.50 for motor vehicles or trailers. The permit allows use of the highways for a time not to exceed 96 hours. The permit is used to move an unregistered vehicle out of the state of Utah.

I think $2.50 is better than any ticket you will get.

Getting a ticket for the plate is one thing. But if you get into an accident (your fault or not), your insurance won't cover ANYTHING AT ALL because the car is not registered. Don't risk it.

Check with your particular carrier, but most companies will give you up to 30 days to register and insure the car, and you're covered under your current policy during that time. I'd try the phone, not a forum to verify that.

I'm pretty sure you don't need transport plates for a non-dealer, but would call the state as well. Definitely keep BoS and insurance info with you until you get a plate. Agreed that putting one on the car which isn't actually registered to it is a bad idea......

WTF? They'll give you 30 days to insure AND register the car? So any mofo can drive around with a mickey mouse bill of sale for 30 days without any real plates or insurance card? Are you f-ing kidding me? I think YOU are making up shit here.

jp - definitely the case with State Farm, assuming you already have coverage with them and get it bound on your new car within 30 days. Obviously, sooner is better but every time I've called them I get the same answer.

Most states will let you run dealer plates for 15-30 days. Hell, I recently bought a car out of state and can't even get the title information here in two weeks apparently!

Sorry for sounding like a smartass earlier, but my real point was just to check with your particular carrier, and it may make things easier.

ill be honest i used to do the exact same thing with my friend all the time. sometimes we would take the plates from another car or just plates he had lying around.

i would see if the person your buying it from would let you use their plates to drive it home and then just mail it back to them. depends on the person but ive done this before to.

Just drive with no plates at all then if you get pulled over you can tell the cops "At least I didn't take the plates off my BMW"

False, your existing policy should cover the car for 30 days. The registration does not have anything to do with the coverage anyway.
