Kuni in Beaverton, OR has the car still.

The new turbo is in; the brake, steering and tire sensors are reset. It looks like the mass rebalance took. New radio. New battery. Apparently my CBU work was done correctly, which is where we started this discussion months ago.

Kuni wants to do a second oil change, which I agree with, and keep the car form some test driving, which I also agree with.

Overall quite a frustrating waste of time and money. I will be going back after the original dealer in an attempt to get my money back.

Oil change was done. On the test drive faults came up. NOX sensor bad.
Replaced under 7/70.

On the test drive smooth running codes for #2 and #4 came up. Cleared. then #4 came back. Hmmm. How is the compression in #4? Full compression test. All is fine.

OK. How about 6 new injectors? Fine. Replaced under 7/70. OK, now we need to start again with re-learn and mass balance, like for the 4th time.

So today we are at about 90 days and $10K worth of work! Wow.

Please tell me these dealers have provided you with a loaner car.

Not quite so much as one would hope. About 10 days worth.

Resolution

After 100 days we have the car back!

In addition to the turbo, injectors, we ended up with a new glow plug and EGR cooler. Tons of other work and misc parts.

Is the car fixed? Yes. I took it to the track directly from the dealer and ran the PIR track night.

The car ran well. Certainly the soot got blown out of it tonight.

At PIR it ran about 120 on the front straight and about 130 on the back on street tires. Good clean fun, but there is certainly lots more potential there with track tires and a less squishy suspension.

I tried to keep the driving well balanced and liquified all 4 tires equally.

The "final bill" is not quite clear yet. I had to pay for the CBU, plus a glow plug, some seals, a battery and some labor.

BMW paid for a turbo, 6 injectors, about a million hours of labor, an EGR cooler, various other bits.

6 injectors + a turbo + EGR cooler, that is $5K in costs. Yeah, and that radio thing. CBU equipment, seals, battery, that is nearly $2K. Labor time would be really painful for all the time spend, easily 50 hours. There were at least 6 relearn cycles. Plus a few oil changes.

When I think about it, I think "more than $10K". That is likely true. Less than $15K.

I am trying to get my money back from the first dealer. They did the DPF tank program, and that was not a cheap item. Also, they changed an oil line.
They held my car and demanded some cash to let it go without fixing it. Kinda odd.

Reading this post has me terrified. I just bought a 2011 335d 2 weeks ago. I *think* it just had CBU cleaning done as it was "at the machine shop for 2 weeks" according to the SA i spoke with.

To be clear, an EGR "delete" will prevent this problem from happening for the most part?

Oil catch can wouldn't hurt either.

Nothing to be terrified about, CBU cleaning is now routine. Modifying emissions systems will cause the car to flunk inspection in many states, especially when the service engine soon light is illuminated because of mods.

Yes, install the EGR block and it will prevent this type of cbu. You will not fail emissions unless you are silly enough to leave it on during the test.

Usually with CBU the dealer will first start throwing injectors at the car. Can someone who has been through this process tell me what happens after this? Will the car run fine again for awhile after getting new injectors?

No, the codes should pretty much come right back if its cbu since the injectors are not at fault.

Working through this whole problem I have learned a huge amount about the whys and hows of CBU cleanup. If I get some spare time, I plan a big write-up. But that is like 25 hours worth of work, so do not hold your breath.

After CBU cleaning (and the rest of that crap), the car runs better than it did new. Even without any other mods. Fuel mileage went up too.

CBU seems to be unavoidable for certain cars and driving habits. I now see CBU cleaning as a 50K mile service thing. Oil changes are *required* at 5K.

I ask is because the dealer says they replaced injectors and my car is ready to be picked up now. I have the BMW gold extended warranty. If i go back there and pick it up and pay the $50 copay, then the ses light is thrown again, will I have to pay $50 again next time for the same issue?

You could ask them to waive the co-pay if you are right back at the dealer for the same issue. Recently I took mine in and they replaced the NOx sensors...they called me up and said she was ready to go. I pull out of the parking lot and the SES is on. It could have been on when I got in for all I know since I really didn't expect to have an issue and I was in a hurry. I took the car back and the SA waived the CPO co-pay since the issue was obviously not fixed.
