TPMS no reset option

Hi

My TPMS flagged yesterday. Turns out one of my tyres was down to 26psi

So I put it to 38 and checked the rest etc.

I've tried to follow the procedure to reset but I don't get the reset option

Anyone had this issue ?

Not sure what the issue is.
If you are using the stalk "reset" will come up on the display which will be ticked once complete.
If using iDrive the function you need is "confirm tyre pressure" which you press with the car stationary. You then need to drive the car for the setting to become active but from memory I do not think that you get an acknowledgment that the task has been completed apart from the fact that the warning light on the dash will not be on any more.

I literally just did this in mine to check, you CAN do this with the ignition ON (engine started) as that's what I just did.

I just cycled through the menu and hit RESET with the button on the end of the stalk...

Just thinking...

Could this be to do with tread depth ??

If the TPMS works on rotation, then say if one tyre is new, and one on legal limit the it could trick the system ??

I'm pretty sure its based on actual pressure from the tyre as each wheel has a 433mhz monitoring valve:

Depends on the year of the car. Earlier ones like mine use the ABS pick-ups and compare the rotational speed of each wheel. That is why to reset the TPMS you have to drive the car so that it can zero out things like uneven wear and slightly different pressures. It just looks for a change in what you have told it is normal.

Later cars have actual pressure transducers built into the valves and will give you a pressure readout of each tyre on the dashboard. Obviously this system can be reset statically because the car knows what pressure is in each tyre.

Do we know what system the OP has?

Hi

It's an 05.

I'm thinking this may be a sensor issue..

I just pumped up the fronts to 38 and rears to 42, set INIT then drove off. Red warning light came back on after about 5 seconds.

I've tried everything I can think off. But I can't even get into the service reset menu presuming because the red TPMS light does not extinguish. My OBII scanner does not pick up any error codes either.

Does anyone know where these sensors are located?

might be nothing but they are a bit high,,mine are 38 rear and 36 front,,doubt it would matter to you as you reset it..but give it a go..nowt to ;lose..also have you checked for nails in tyre etc

Do you have actual pressures showing on the dash for each wheel?

If not you will have the system that uses the ABS sensors so if there was a sensor fault I would expect other warnings associated with ABS or traction to appear too.

If you have individual pressures showing on the dash then the sensors are part of the valve and are inside the tyre. You need to take the tyre off the rim to get at them.

Either way it should be easy to tell if it is a sensor fault in this case.

After your drive did you check the tyre pressures again with the same gauge that you used to inflate them to see if there is a leak?

The actual pressures will not matter since what the system is looking for is a change which is why you have to reset the system every time you alter the tyres so that you effectively cancel out any difference for tread wear etc.

Hi

Thanks for the input.

However I've checked both using my handheld tyre pressure tool and the local garage and my tyre pressures are only varying the odd psi, most likely because of temp differences.

How much is the odd psi?

It is quite a sensitive system as rasa knows because 5psi triggered the warning on his car.

The difference before and after of the SAME WHEEL is what matters not the difference between left to right or front to back because you zero that out by resetting.

I think at this point I would check the pressure at each corner and write it down. Reset the system. Go for the drive, say a couple of miles, then recheck the pressures comparing each wheel before and after values. Provided you do not go mad on your test drive I would expect all 4 tyre pressures to alter by a similar amount if this is not the case on one wheel we can start looking at that corner.

Hi

Thanks for the input really appreciate it.

So I'm talking 0.5 psi tolerance. Other than that completely consistent on all 4 corners.

I don't understand why it would show the warning straight away even after INIT. Surely would indicate a flat tyre if it noticed a psi drop in 5 seconds?

When you press "select" and the toggle goes out do you press "select" again for 5 seconds?
You should then get the tick
