EDIABAS warning - Windows 10

Hi,

I recently created my coding VM again from scratch on Windows 10. Now I occasionally get a warning when opening anything that calls EDIABAS. I'm using the BimmerGeeks standard tools install.

Everything works OK. I flashed a module using WinKFP and ran INPA without any problems. Is this error normal with Windows 10?

It seems to be related to program cycle time but I don't think it's virtualiser related as my Win7 VM also running on VMWare15 is fine.

Why use a VM if your on a Windows PC it's not necessary.
It's just overhead on a PC.
Also most of us don't understand German.

I work as a software engineer, if I installed every development package on my host machine the thing would never boot and the multitude of applications which rely on common services like SQL would all fail. Virtualisation is standard practice for a plethora of reasons, the miniscule overheads of the host are barely even worth considering.

I'm not a software engineer but my first step would be to install it natively on that LP or another and see if you still get that error. I've probably installed it and used it on a few dozen LPs and have never seen that error.

Why not use a laptop dedicated to just tuning cars? They are dirt cheap

I solved the issue by upgrading to the latest VMWare 15.5 and assigning more virtual cores to the guest. I think there must be some change in execution priority with Windows 10 vs Windows 7.

A cheap laptop would be slow. Not so terrible when just using INPA but ISTA is horrible on bad hardware.

The overheads on virtual machines are about 3%. Having a laptop with 32GB of RAM, NVMe storage and an i7 CPU running at only 97% makes for a much better base than a machine with 4GB of RAM, a mechanical storage drive and some junk celeron CPU.

I tried using Rheingold once on an old laptop of mine when it first came out and it took over a minute just to load, never mind doing a diagnostic session.

It's not a processor or memory intensive application. The bottleneck is all disk I/O. A small SSD in a cheap ancient laptop is all you need to be happy.

I think the older the better? I'm downgrading (upgrade?) Windows 10 Yoga 11e into Windows 7. I hope the software will work right with windows 7 instead of 10 in compatible mode.
I wish I can find as good Windows XP netbook, but they didn't much exist back then.

I wouldn't worry about downgrading. Everything runs great in Windows 10 now. I have ISTA/P and ISTA+ running perfectly along with the usuals like WinKFP and INPA.

A fresh install of Windows 10 is worthwhile though. The upgrade installations are always messy.

CarAbuser is correct. All BMW software (BMW standard tools, ISTA-P/D) runs fine in Windows 10. If you are having a problem it is likely due to an installation issue.

This. Older Dell on Win7 but running a new 1TB SSD and it's up in seconds.

Hi guys. I have a few concerns about Win10. I guess I'm the only person here who has not still upgraded my Windows version, but I don't care. I love my Win7 too much. Still, are there any reasons for upgrading to Win10/11? Just curious to know what you think. Sorry for bumping the old thread.

Hey there. Well, Windows 10 has a lot of great features, like improved security and performance, and a more user-friendly interface. Plus, if you're a gamer, you'll definitely want to upgrade to take advantage of DirectX 12. One thing to keep in mind is that you can actually get some pretty cheap windows keys online, so upgrading doesn't have to be expensive. Just make sure you're getting them from a reputable source. At the end of the day, it's really up to you whether or not you want to upgrade. If you're happy with Windows 7 and don't feel like you're missing out on anything, then there's no need to change. But if you're curious about what Windows10/11 has to offer, it might be worth checking out.
