Switch out the summer tires yet?

A slim chance of light snow for the DC area late Tuesday into Wednesday. Probably no snow will fall, but even the possibility has made me think maybe I should go ahead and swap my 18" summers for my 17" winters on Tuesday. Has anyone else in this area made the switch yet? I know it will be like 70 degrees out here as soon as I switch.

Was just thinking about this today. I can't remember if I have a torque wrench handy ... what is the recommended ft/lb again? 90?

Ahem, your local E90 weather guy here....

Long range says if you can get around the dusting we have coming up, you ought to be good until at least the week prior to Christmas.

We'll have some cold days, but not a lot of precip forecast right now with it.

Right around there. 88.5 lb-ft (120 Nm) is recommended, but my OEM jack came with a 130 Nm torque wrench, so I guess you can go tighter without any ill effects.

i swapped out my summer/winter tires this past Saturday on the e92 & e53. its kinda sad

but i'll probably sell my 189s and get some new rims for the spring

I beleive summer tires are good only at 7 degrees C or warmer (about 45F), so I swapped a couple of weeks ago. Actually, I was surprised by ride quality and noise improvement - non-RFT 17" dunlop winters are so much better than 18" staggered stock ones. I guess I'll be going non-RFT for summers too... Although traction does suffer from the switch - I managed to spin 4 wheels during regular driving for the first time (I saw 4 foot-long black strips).

Winter tyres have much softer rubber compound.

Will switch to my 16" winters about middle of the month, when I get back from London. Incidentally, these will be my first dedicated winter setup so I'm curious to feel the difference

I was browsing tirerack today for a winter set-up. I don't plan on using it in the snow, but I would hate to caught out even in light snow conditions by accident, not to mention better traction for the cold temps. Anyone have any recommendations where else I might want to look for a good deal on a full set of tires and rims? Nothing flashy, just something to run on from mid Dec till late March. I'm coming up with about $1200.
What have you all spent?

I think I spent about that much. I just did the Tire Rack "recommended for your car" tires last year, and they were great. I put Wheel Wax on them today and plan to swap them out, either tonight by headlamp (brrrrr...), tomorrow morning, or maybe I'll say f*(& it, I'll do it next week and take my chances tomorrow with the summer tires.

Mine are Dunlop M3 DSST (RFT) 225 R17 on 17" ASA JH3 rims. I'd highly recommend the Dunlop M3 or M3 DSST (the RFT version). The tread is the same on both, but I wanted to go with a RFT tire. Here are some photos from last year.

I picked my car up at the end of Sept. It came with and still has the RFT's. Are all RFT's worthless in the snow? Is it a do-or-die item to swith to winter tires? I'm asking because I'm also paying for a wedding (mine) and am watching my expenses... Then again, I'll be driving from the DE line to BWI daily for work, so if they're deadly, I'll look into it.

Any input is appreciated.

Those actually look pretty good. Not sure what luck I will have getting them this year. supplies are already low and I don't want leftovers. I have the Jeep, so I may just try to lip through till spring and hopefully won't get caught in a light snow with the E92. From what I remember of my E46 330, it handled like crap in the snow with summers........even very light snow. I am going to see what tirerack has right now. If they have your package, I may order it.

I have the same rims as BK but have the Blizzak tires. Got them from Tirerack too which I thought was priced nicely and they've performed well so far.

How did everyone make out in the snow this morning? I had to go to Reston off the toll road and have yet to switch out the RFT's and the car was fishtailing like a bitch. It annoyed the hell out of me, coming from an AWD car. Gotta get some snows or all seasons asap.

kept the E92 in garage... There's no way our cars are driveable in even light snow.. Our Mazda CX9 was slipping when moving uphill and downhill this morning...

2 hours in traffic. couldn't even reach son's school.
Just turned around and came back home.
saw 3 overturned cars and a few other accidents.
