Fuel leak - E90 330i (55)

Second time this has happened now.

Only when it's full, it leaks. Not over fueling, as soon as it clicks I stop.

Anyone know what the cause can be?

Leak is from the fuel tank breather and leaks just infront of the offside rear wheel.

Think I've just discovered this on Wednesday too. Mines an '06 car and filled the tank and then could smell petrol and had a small puddle beside the car.

Would this be covered by BMW warranty as it's a pipe leaking?

If you have warranty then it will be covered.

Dealership - £700-800 (i was quoted this by BMW in Crewe).
Indi - £300-400

I did it myself and it wasn't the nicest of jobs but certainly not the worst.

A couple of years ago I got quoted £275 or thereabouts for my old 330i by a couple of indi specialists in Essex.
They actually advised me to just not brim the tank, no brimming = no leaking!

Unfortunately not as I no longer have access to a ramp and there is no way I would want to tackle it on the driveway. Sorry.

Is there no way the pipe can be patched up? In situ.

Pipes a poor design and basically gets chafed over a period of time as said one way to stop having the problem(though its not the correct course of action)is to simply not fill the tank, the signs once filled apart from the smell will be a small trace of a fuel leak ahead of the off side rear wheel, the jobs fairly labour intensive(when you have the job done it does help if the tank is reasonably low re fuel as this has to be moved slightly to carry out the requiired fix)

We've done a fair few and its an unexpected bill for many, its fairly labour intensive the parts bill though isn't too bad. I'm kind of surprised as this is a known issue that BMW hasn't made a point of raising a re call like they have done say with the E46 air bag re call. Fuel after all leaking from a pipe isn' exactly something you can ignore. If on an MOT this was seen guess what its a failure.

Having seen the replacement part BMW have altered the pipe its got more protection yet the route it follows is nigh on exactly the same as the old pipe that came out, therefore with the given flexing issue of the car in motion I hope the pipe will last a lot longer than some of the old one's we've taken out.

Unfortunately after some research it appears in VOSA do not think of it as enough of an issue as others tried to get them to do something and after investigation they deemed it not to be serious enough of a leak to cause any harm apparently.

So it's a fix it yourself at your own cost issue again.

I do get a little peeved tbh as over this side of the pond we get shafted left, right and centre on the same issues that over the other side get covered by BMW NA warranty. This fuel leak issue, HPFP, wastegate rattle, etc etc etc...

They assume the cure is to just neglect it and not fill to the brim, which I can assume is hardly safe with fuel leaking

Mmmmm... the lovely smell of fuel in the car after every drive when tank is over half full & fuel pissing out in front of rear wheel if parked off camber with almost full tank.

I'm in that club too.

Not dangerous my arse.......Glad I'm not a smoker.
