Anyone using a Cobb catted DP?

What sort of gains did you see from it (and with what tune)?
How much louder is it than the stock DP?
Any increased smell?
Have you passed an emissions inspection with it (and in what state)?

Thanks,
Robert

I'm interested too possibly by summer time when I install my tune. I've had catted Downpipe that I bought aftermarket. The sound is perfect imo, not any drone whatsoever but who knows with the Cobb catted DP. And on top of that, there's no smell.

Ditto, I am interested in hearing more. Anyone from Cobb on here chime in?

Subbed, I am going to the Cobb first Thursday meet at the HQ in Austin tonight so I will try to see if I can find a rep and ask.

Normally I stay away from Cobb bolt ons as they are pretty overpriced, but a DP that would pass emissions might be worth it.

The catted downpipes do not produce the same gains as catless and are double the price. Also Cobb has made it clear on their website that you will still get a CEL light with these.

I think someone posted a Wagner Catted DP review and indicated they were not getting any codes - if you are just worried about passing emissions.

Also I saw a good deal on a new CP-E catted downpipe in the for sale area a few weeks back - not sure if its still for sale or would pass emissions either... just an FYI.

Ya there is no CEL if you have a tune installed but if you remove the tune then the light will come on. This is the same case as the catless downpipe.

The problem with catted DP is that it is a matter of time before cats fails and it starts producing an engine light.

Yes but he also said the wagner DP didnt fit right and made his exhaust tips tilt, and that the customer service from wagner was crappy.

That sucks. Is that the case with all catted DPs? The brands I'm aware of are Cobb, AR, CPE and Wagner. I'm open to any of them.

That sucks too. Thing is I can't deal with the noise and the smell of a catless DP. Was hoping to get some modest gains from a catted without the smell and with a tolerable amount of noise, but between all of this and the emissions test issues I'm wondering if I should keep my stock DP and confine my mods to the upstream side of the DP.

Have you thought about putting a catless DP in and running high flow cats where the X-drives have them or even getting Xdrive mid pipes? Should be much less restriction down stream. I have heard gains are minimal from removing them. Won't help with a CEL, but would with smell/noise.

Nope, haven't thought of that. Wonder if it would pass a CA emissions test (kinda doubt it, but don't know). Could probably program off a CEL w/ Cobb, but then would put OEM tune back on before taking it to dealer, and CEL would come back on. Car has 45K on it, only 5K left on warranty but it is CPO and has 100K extended drivetrain warranty.

Was at Cobb HQ last night and their Catted DPs are for "offroad use only."

Thanks for asking them about it. They say that on their website too, along with the warning about the CEL. I think they're well aware that people use things on street cars, and that they're just covering their behind with statements like that. Did they say anything else about it, i.e. any answers to the questions in my OP?

They had an n55 335i that was pretty much my exact car there with full Cobb bolt ons.

1. What sort of gains did you see from it (and with what tune)?
A little more restrictive than catless was the answer
2. How much louder is it than the stock DP?
It was in-between the stock DP and my VRSF Catless DP (he had Cobb exhaust but that didn't make a difference on cold start and low revs)
3. Any increased smell?
It smelled stronger than stock but not bad at all
4. Have you passed an emissions inspection with it (and in what state)?
Wouldn't give me a straight answer.

No problem, I highly recommend the VRSF DP though

I know that Cali restrictions can be rough but there are tons of members running them over there even on n55 I am sure all your worries could be addressed before you make your decision. Just have to ask the right people.

Yes, my indy shop says there is a way to pass emissions tests, but it sounds like a bit of a hassle. Plus I'm sure my wife would make me take a catless DP off as soon as she heard and smelled it!

You should find a local member with your car who has catless, I don't really notice the smell at all and I drive with my windows down in Texas all the time haha. I still have my secondary cats though.

Good idea, will see about that. I'm pretty sure my car doesn't have secondary cats though.

Only way to know for sure is get up under and look.

EDIT: I may be completely wrong about n55 having secondary cats, looks like only xdrives have the catted midpipe in n55.

This thread has a 2011 e90 335xi that makes me think you might have them:

2011 N55 335xi sedan has them, pretty sure the RWD sedan doesn't.
