Broken jb4
I finally dyno'd my car after not noticing a seat of the pants difference with this second hand JB4 ISO.
On the dyno there was no difference in power between map 0 and map 1, exactly 280rwhp. Pulled the unit out and popped the cover off to find a broken resistor. Heat on rear side of PCB Can BMS fix this or is it junk at this point? Last edited by LSx; 04-29-2015 at 03:48 AM.. |

BMS might sell you just the board. Email them!

Change the resistor. The lines on the resistor tell you the size looks like a 2 watt resistor. Post the picture on n54tech and ask someone to tell you what resistor if you can't measure it our read the strips. Get a soldering iron and replace the resistor

That broken resistor is the clipped diode that is done to make it ISO. Have you tried to hook up a laptop? If the car runs fine with it on and you can switch maps I doubt it is bad.

Isn't that diode supposed to be broken? To upload the iso firmware. I know I pulled mine off for my n55 iso, but it didn't get brown and burnt looking like that.
Make sure your firmware is updated(iso) and compare map 4(stock) with map 1. Personally my car goes bonkers on map 0 after I did the iso mod. I know bms will sell you just the g5 board, but the board alone would cost probably just as much as you paid for your used jb4, sorry for the bad experience. Definitely not cool on the seller's end.... It didn't just burn up like that during shipping lol, such a dick move. All the best! |

That's a diode. As long as the trace isn't open and the vias are intact, it will take about 30 second to remove and replace for anyone with experience repairing electronics. Looks like either that sucker got hot enough to reflow the solder, or someone was messing around in there that's not very good with an iron.

The diode is the black guy to the right of the grey resistor, the diode has been clipped, but the resistor is cracked and got everything so hot that the plastic JB4 case is deformed on the outside in that spot (but not bad enough that I noticed it until I thought something was wrong).

If you have the tiny case it is known that they melt from the outside in, not inside out. Hopefully you can figure iut if it is actually working before filing the dispute. I agree it doesn't look very good however.

If you have a DVM or ohm meter you can check to see if that resistor is bad.
Research the color coding on it and it will tell you the resistance amount it should have (may even be on the board) then just connect the probes at each end on the back of the board and voila you will see if it's good or bad. Posters above are correct, the diode is the black thing. Yeah, what HP Hound said above. Good luck. |

Hey can you tell me the colors on the resistor? it is hard to tell from the picture but it looks like it is White, Grey, Brown, Silver. if that is correct you just need to get a 980ohm 10%tolerance resistor to replace it.
But you would honestly be suprised on how much a resistor can actually take and still work. i work repairing electronics and have seen resistors smoke then end up still working even though the outside is black afterwards hahaha. if you dont have a multimeter i would suggest getting that for trouble shooting. most likely i would say that your board that the resistor is soldered into my have lost connection with it causing an opening in the circut. if you have any questions just let me know and good luck. |

If the resistor was bad you'd have a fault code every time you started the car. Post your dyno logs on BMS' support forum and they can help you determine the true cause for your lack of power. Probably software related.

I've been in contact with Terry@BMS and he said that the resistor doesn't actually do anything and that something else is wrong.
The resistor checks out at 69.4ohm, but you can't tell what the colors are on the stripes so I don't know what it's supposed to be. On the software side, it has the very latest firmware from the ISO thread, along with all the proper settings as stated in that thread as well. |

So do you know it has the latest firmware because you connected it to your computer? If that is the case then log map 4 and map 1. If you are going by what the seller said then you have no idea what firmware it has.

Yes, I updated it to the latest release myself and set all the settings to default plus the changes required for the ISO.
