335d M Sport 1st gear launch question
Hi Folks,
I have a quick question about the 335d I've just collected. This afternoon I booted it away from a set of traffic lights with the box in DS and rather than take off like a scolded cat, which was my expected results, it barely trickled away. This carried on up to about 2000rpm at which point the expected fireworks kicked in and normal warp factor service was resumed. This I think has happened a couple of times and I wondered if this is normal behaviour or if something is amiss? I've had TDs before which torque limit and I don't recall the TC light flashing away. Thanks Steve |

The 335d is not a drag racer mate!

I realise its not a dragster, but this felt like my old Impreza days of monumental turbo lag then a swift kick up the bum when the turbo finally realises you've pushed the loud pedal. It felt like zero boost at all which is where I'd guess the 1st smaller turbo should be doing its thing then the larger one comes on tap and the car just went from that point.

Sounds like TC cutting in to me, unlikely to be turbo lag in a 335d.....
Its a different car in the dry if you press the DTC button for a second or two to partially disable it...

Its just pretty normal for foot down hard in the 335D.
Mine is like a stunned slug if you boot it from standing... you will need to learn from Carlos how to brake boost which is still not exactly fantastic IMHO, or feed the power in much more steadily. Matt |

Hold the DTC button down until all nannies are turned off, give it another try, and let us know the results. Oh, and be careful your car doesn't go sideways and hurt someone.

Could this be the torque converter deliberately slipping to give a smooth launch?
My 320D auto revs climb very quickly to about 2000 before the car moves much in 1st or 2nd, then the speed seems to catch up and all hell breaks loose [Probably not as much hell as a 335D though]. Its as though you were slipping the clutch on a manual. |

Its almost certainly something to do with stopping all the torque going down at once.
I am sure Tony will explain it to us at some point if he feels inclined/spots the thread. Matt |

I've had a bit more of a drive around today and gone for the not boot it approach and it seems much better so I wondered if it was protecting itself, even thou no tc light was shown. It really does feel like lag I used to get on the Impreza, where nothing happened until you hit 2500rpm then it went, this was barely moving then hits 2000rpm and away it goes.
Will see how I get on over the next few days if it keeps doing it or does it at other time down to BMW it'll go to get checked over. |

I never felt that in my 335d on a fast start unless, the dtc button wasn't pushed once. If you leave the systems on and you go for a quick start the dsc will interfere and then the car will behave like you are saying...
The best way for a quick start would be to push the dtc button, switch to ds, hold the brake and rev it a little and then slam the gas... |

If it is still misbehaving then you know its something else. BTW: the TC light doesn't come on until you're really overcooking it, so its doing things in the background long before it tells you about it. |
