Final Decision on Tires (Help)
Hi everyone, I am about to purchase my set this week and could use some final guidance. Thank you in advance.
General Info: - 2011 335i Sedan (M Sport Package) - I live in Nor-Cal (Light to Medium Rain) - I want non-runflat high performance tires - Looking to get a smoother ride + high performance increase in acceleration/grip - My budget is around $800 for the set My choices: - MICHELIN / PILOT SPORT A/S 3 (W- OR Y-SPEED RATED) - BRIDGESTONE / POTENZA RE970AS POLE POSITION - BFGOODRICH / G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S I am also looking to get new rims: HERE so I was wanting to make sure they would be the right fit together. Any and all advice would be great. Thank you! |

Among these, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 has the best handling and steering response and best wet traction. The BFG will have better snow traction and will ride a bit more softly. The Bridgestone falls in between the two, but is still a pretty large step down in handling and grip from the Michelin.

I had several sets of PSS when I was doing a lot of track weekends, on both an E92 M3 and Porsche. It is a great tire, assuming you don't have much sub-freezing winter weather. I am now retired, both from work and track, and have a 335i sport package coupe, 6 speed, with the Pilot Sport A/S 3. The difference in dry traction on the street is minimal, as is wet weather performance. The A/S 3 is not good in snow, but better than the PSS, same for colder temps. In short, you will get longer life from the A/S 3, with no significant difference in road performance. If you were doing track weekends, and getting the PSS up to sticky temps, I'd recommend it, but for overall street use, hard to beat the A/S 3.

I have the same car as you and also live in NorCal. When I bought my car 1.5 years ago I ditched the runflats on day 1. I bought Michelin Pilot Super Sports (stock sizes on OEM rims) because everyone on this board raves about them. But as I progressed with suspension and then engine mods I found they did not have enough traction for me. When I got new rims I switched to Bridgestone RE-11s and am very happy with them. I did go up in width at the same time so can't give the tire all the credit for the improved grip, but I will not go back to PSSs after driving these. They might be pricier than the others you listed, but not a whole lot more I think.
