LSD Diff Bearings
I did a search with no success. Has anyone managed to get hold of the diff bearings? I got the Quaife diff installed for 2000 miles and I started to get noises in the back, a whine when I transition from power off to power on.

You might want to check the LSD installation... to have issues so soon afterwards makes me want to think it wasn't shimmed or otherwise installed correctly inside of your pumpkin.

I don't think it was a installation problem. It happened in a evening of some very serious abuse including seven on the spot burnouts. Initially I though the torque converter went but upon closer inspection I realized the noise was from the back.
My diff dude is trying to match the bearings, if he succeeds I will let you guys know.

I don't know what size it is...but I'm sure a replacement is offered. Look at the link below.

Find your 'carrier/pumpkin/final-drive-unit' in the junk yard search. Then buy the cheapest similar model (welded is fine). Then gut it for parts (bearings). -scheherazade |

Zeph you where totally right. The diff was not shimmed properly so I am sitting with a worn crown and pinion. So basically the most important component is shot. I have fitted another diff but would like to have this one repaired. Anyone know if these parts are available?

There was no issue with noise until after the bedding in process. I think the extreme hard acceleration and deacceleration back over and over again killed it... I thought these quaifes were able to handle such abuse since theyre designed for the track! |

The Quaife chunk itself is pretty much bullet proof. Ring & crown gears are not. If the shims were not done right, backlash not right, or the bearings were damaged, then it was just a matter of time. BMW does not want their own service depts cracking pumpkins. There are only a few experts that I would entrust with this job.
Noise is difficult to diagnose. There are several potential sources in the drive train for whine, knocks, and other sounds. I once thought my tranny was going on an old BMW, dealer was set to replace it. I dug in and found some nylon thread that whirred at speed. That was a relief!
