E92 335D steering lash [video]

I'm a bit suspect of the amount of lash my steering rack has.

It has never felt that crisp.

Had a look tonight and can move the rack by hand - the road wheels were not turning. The ignition lock was off. Seems to have rather a lot of lash - and fair amount of steering wheel play from side to side. I would have expected it to be pretty solid without any power going through it.

And a fair bit of oil haze around the lower rubber seal and joint. You can see where I brushed some off around the universal joint.

Anybody else with a 335i/D and hydraulic steering rack confirm whether this is the norm - before I pop into the Dealer ?

D.

Nope not normal.
Mine has zero play at rest or under pressure.

The play may well be in one or other steering rod axial balljoints, or the track rod ends.
These are all 'wear' items and easily damaged by kerb collisions too.

Thanks Steve,

Nobody else with a 335i or 335D care to comment ? It takes 30 seconds to pop the bonnet, and check the lash at the rack like I show in the video.

Just follow the steering column from your steering wheel through the bulkhead and into the steering rack.

Take care as the exhaust is on that side in the UK. Best to check it before starting the engine.
