My CPO 2007 had a delivery date in March/07, so my warranty goes up to March/2013. Just my 2 cents |

According to the diagnosis do I need a whole complete engine or just the long block assembly?

Looks like someone will have to disassemble your engine and see what repairs would be necessary. Search you tube and see the re-builds of the e46 engine by HPF as reference. The easy fix, for the dealer, is to charge you for a new engine. Find someone local that can repair it...i feel for you, but one should always stay away from Perillo BMW and any of their affiliates. They are pretty shady and it's well known.

Looks like you need a new engine bub.
If the head is gone and the timing chain is gone then your block should be on its way out. Only thing for you to do now, is to have it ripped apart and build the block and upgrade your cams, pistons, rods, etc and slap on some good turbos. That should cost you $15k and you will not regret it. |

Something here smells fishy. Either the OP is leaving some things out or the dealer is being incredibly shady. The OP wouldn't pay a to have 'Huge' oil leak fixed, but happily shelled out the $810 for the diagnose? If there was some problem with the serpentenee belt that the dealer fixed, and that caused the failure, the dealer would be at fault for not properly cleaning the engine out when they fixed it. Not to mention the inconsistencies with the In service date and the warranty.
Can anyone run a carfax on the VIN or plate? A salvage title would certainly explain some of the story. |

I assume timing chains are sealed under the valve cover? I dont see how the hair-thin belt fragments got inside the valve cover. Unless these timing chains are run dry outside of the oil environment? (that would be odd)

@BMWLove86: Do you have a buddy who knows his or her way around cars? I mean works on their own car, that type of thing? If so, ask them to go to bat for you and look things over, including working out the details on getting a new engine if it's needed. Buy them a nice lunch or something to get their help.
This is getting too complicated for you, no offense (it would be too complicated for lots of folks). And, while there are a number of people here on the forums who know what they're doing, they just don't have enough information. It's best to see and hear what's going on directly. It's being too filtered by what they ask/what you post back. Or, maybe some of the local forum members (you're in Chicago, right?) could recommend a very good nearby Independent shop, with a sterling reputation.... No matter what, it sounds like it's going to cost you thousands I'm sorry to say, but I think that the two options above are your best chance at getting out with a (mostly) intact bank account and a working, reliable car.

Installing one of these engines is going to be expensive, no lie. The sheer number of hours necessary to do it all properly....
A pro could do it (with a shop full of the best tools) in, maybe 15 hours? Probably more. Remember, this is properly removing the old engine and then properly installing the new engine, transferring accessories, etc. All that to say, don't be too surprised if the price he quotes you, if you supply the engine, as something north of $1k. |
