I looked on the online manual, it says is possible using the stalk controls. I gave it a try but the option dont come up. when i go through the menu i can adjust the clock or date, or it says check. Thats all Its a uk 320d by the way if that makes any difference? Thanks |

Did your car come new with the factory alarm installed? Or did you do the install later, or buy the car from someone who may have installed it?
Are you sure the alarm is active? Did you try and set it off? Even if the clown nose is blinking, doesn't mean the alarm has been coded (activated) if it was installed at a later date and did not come with car new from factory that way

pretty sure car came with factory alarm new.
I bought the car used from a bmw dealer. Ill check the alarm works later, will using the panic button work or should i try to set off the alarm by opening the door? Just wondering even if i dont have the alarm. should i not have the option to change things in the menu as currently only date and time comes up. No picture of a key? |

Panic button would work just fine. But if you have the blinky clown nose when you lock the car from the remote - you have an alarm. But just because the hardware is present, doesn't mean that it has been 'coded' into the car - this enables the car to recognize that it has the alarm feature. Even cars that are prewired for alarm, but do not have the actual alarm hardware, are not coded yet. You have to install all the hardware (hood switch, US module, siren/tilt indicator) and then have the car coded to have it recognize the alarm and utilize it's features fully.
At any rate, even if there is no alarm, you should be able to toggle thru the menu with the stalk to get the icon of key with a check mark. There are quite a few submenus under this menu that have nothing to do with the alarm. This is going on assumption that your car is same as my 09 as that is all I have experience with. Well, there is an option for 'light flash' or 'light flash with audible' upon door lock listed in my 09 manual that is available thru stalk. Not sure if that is it, but what else could be 'audible' upon locking the doors other than the alarm chirp? There isn't anything else in the car to make noise but alarm siren... Need to push in on end button to go thru menu until you get to the icon that is a key with check mark, then use the center toggle button to toggle thru the submenus till you see an icon that looks like a light & horn together, then turn this feature 'On' Easiest way to check if alarm is even installed is to look for hood switch on cowl under hood, right below windshield driver side, by the driver side plastic cover for your brake master cylinder. One would assume that if that switch is present, the rest of the alarm is also. A more difficult way would be to take down the rear overhead console and check to see if the UltraSonic module is present. I installed my alarm after the fact and had it coded - audible chirp worked right away once it was coded without me having to program anything thru stalk...

However, my Dad in Ireland has had bimmers for years, and like the UK, the alarms have always been standard from the factory. As far as I've seen, there has never been a beep option there. So I would guess that this is only on US models. |

sorry i made a typo before.
My car does not have the alarm. However it does have the red blinking nose on the mirror. Is it easy to retrofit the alarm or am i better off getting a viper or clifford alarm? |

The retrofit kit is pretty easy to install, as long as your car is pre-wired from the factory! I think there is a DIY here for it somewhere. |

Alarm install is fairly EZ if the car is pre-wired. There are threads here that explain how to check for pre-wiring. Also if you have the ability to get your VIN # decoded - the results will tell you whether it is prewired or not. If not prewired, that's another whole ball of wax Not to say you couldn't do it, but it's alot more involved (and more expensive). For instance, my car was prewired, I picked up a slightly used alarm system from member here for $150 - works just fine. New system lowest price I have seen is a BMW dealer on ebay that lists it for $238. You would need to check either Tischer or ECS Tuning on this forum to get wiring harness pricing.

hi, yes the clown nose does blink when i lock the doors.
i pressed the panic button(held the boot open button for 5 seconds) and nothing happened. Its late here now, so in the morning i will lock the door and manually open the door to definately confirm wether there is a alarm or not. Thanks also when all the doors are locked, i tried pressing the boot open button but it does not open the boot? Any ideas |

If you have that blinking upon lock - I would almost think you Have to have the alarm installed (or at the very least the UltraSonic Module is installed in overhead console)
Before I installed my alarm = no blinky blinky After install = blinky blinky but no worky After coding = alarm fully functional That is why I'm leaning toward you just needing the alarm coded. At first you stated you DID have the alarm, then stated you DIDN'T, what made you change your mind?

i really thought i had the alarm, but when i pressed the panic button it didnt work,
but as i said, when i press the boot open button it doesnt open the boot either, so i am going to try to set the alarm off by opening the door, That will definately confirm if there is a alarm. if it does have the alarm and just needs coding, i dont see why the previous owner would not do it, as i was told he worked as a bmw dealer, so he must know how to of done it? edit: just realised i was doing the stalk controls with the ignition off and now i get all the options. but unfortunately no acoustic option is available under the locking menu, Last edited by jazz5000; 07-21-2010 at 04:07 AM.. |

Dealer definitely can do the coding - reason to go thru Patryk is because his pricing is cheaper (dealer wants to charge at least 1 hr time @ $104/hr) and for less $$, Patryk can code multiple little cool things like the digital speedometer option & the ability to remotely roll up/close the windows/sunroof (which you probably already have since your car is Euro).
Here in U.S. our cars are capable of opening both thru the remote, but not close Good catch on the stalk - still might be a coding issue as I did not have the acoustic symbol available on my car either before hardware install, did not check for it after hardware & coding either - I'll have to go out and check to see if I have it now - never really paid attention because the chirp function worked automatically after the coding...

Surprising - lots of UK cars do have it fitted upon arrival. The previous owner had a BMW without a Thatcham-approved sec system? Wow. That's a lot more in insurance, isn't it?

That is how it works. If you unlock the car with the key, it turns off the alarm.
