BMW 335I 13K Miles

Hi All,

I'm looking to buy a 335i N54/N55, but I'm unsure as to which one to go for. I've got my eyes on a 57 plate 335I currently (N54) with only 13k miles on it.

All I can think of in my head is getting the car and having nothing but problems with it, as I've stupidly googled N54 common faults...After searching this I come across; turbo failure, hpfp failure, head gasket leaks, injector failure and wastegate rattle (similar to turbo failure?) Etc.

If anyone has any input that might help me to make my decision, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks 😊

Sounds like you should be deciding for yourself more than asking us.

You know what the cars failure points are and that they can be problems for their owners. Do you want to deal with that?

A 13k mile 10 year old car is going to have the same issues as one with 100k miles at this point.

If you goggle N54 problems, that is what you will get. I think there are far less problems with the N54 then most sport orientated cars. Choose your poison.

This should not be the car for you unless you're willing to get your hands dirty and try to do some of the preventative maintenance yourself.

Googling n54 common failures is one of the smartest thing you can do before purchasing an e9x BMW with an n54. Every failures mention is not a question of if but when it will happen.
What are your plans/goals? What is the reason you're looking at this platform?

Set aside some budget and turn some wrenches to minimize expenses. Its an amazing platform and engine, one of the most tuner friendly cars of its generation and beyond.

Depends on price and options. If it's a steal, go for it

Consider googling or binging the strengths of the N54 engine. You might just end buying it due to that. Of course it's good to consider its weaknesses but don't focus too much on that. Every car has it's unique issues. My N54 is going strong after I did a full overhaul of engine and suspension my self. It's currently at 130k miles and running strong and reliable.

So I suck at wrenching myself. I can clean my air filter, do plugs and coils, boost solenoids etc

I've had my n54 for 8 years and with the help of an honest decent priced mechanic, it hasn't been too bad.

It's paid off, so maintenance cost at this point is much cheaper than a new car.
