Right guys I require a little help. So tonight my car (2010 E91 330d) decided to throw a bit of a wobbler! Had loads of alarms go off for ABS, DSC, Flat tyre monitoring and a couple of others. When braking lightly at very low speed 15-20mph the brake pedal sometimes feels like it pushes back and there is a noise a bit like a spring twanging. Now I'm guessing this is to do with the ABS.

Anyway, when I got home I scanned it with Carly and these are the faults I got to do with the ABS/DSC/Brakes:

00D363
00D35A
005D90
005D93
005D96

A few of them seem to be related to a front left wheel speed sensor. However, I cleared the codes and they all went away apart from:

005D96
Advance Sense front left. / Coil outlet valve (dump) left open at front /15 found short to Uz supply voltage terminal in cyclic valve relay test: valve relay. / Valve relay: determined short to Uz supply voltage terminal 15 in the cyclic valve relay test. / Valve relay: short to Uz supply voltage terminal 15 in the cyclic test valve relay found --- (DSC: controller valve relay) / Sensor cluster CAN bus off

I'm gonna do a bit of googling now to see what I can find, but do any of you guys have any ideas?

Just had a bit of a google and from what is can find it looks like it could be a wheel speed sensor which would coincide with the codes 005D90 & 005D93 that I was getting which cleared. These codes relate to the front left wheel speed sensor.

Would I be right in saying that if a wheel speed senor has failed then the ABS may get a little confused which is why the brake pedal is behaving strangely at very low speed and I'm getting that twanging noise?

Just a thought - is it possible to monitor each wheel speed sensor with Carly to see if one has failed?

I suspect it is but I know nothing about Carly.

Certainly on INPA you can have all 4 abs sensors displayed on the screen at once so you can determine which corner has a problem.
You just need someone to drive your car round the block for you while you watch the live data!

In answer to your earlier question generally if an abs sensor fails it gives the warning but disables the system but then these things are so complex these days that the system might still be active but thinks that a wheel is locked up and you are feeling random abs activation through the brake pedal.

Well my mate has had a look at it tonight and as expected it looks like it's the front left wheel sensor. He looked at live data from each wheel sensor and the front left wasn't reading anything. Also on his equipment it gave the 5D96 code and the description given was the front left sensor. Now I know I had codes relating to that sensor but they cleared. So how come Carly gave me some long winded description about cyclic valve relay tests when it came to the 5D96 code?
Anyway my mate is gonna replace the wheel speed sensor next Thursday evening, so I'll report back then and hopefully bring this thread to a close.

That's all part of the fun of diagnostic codes!
You often get codes pop up for symptoms caused by faulty parts elsewhere.
The magic is interpreting the list of codes to discover what is actually the cause of the fault rather than just a symptom of it.
Since your NSF abs sensor is not producing a signal at all that's probably really screwing up the abs control power up self test and generating the garbage that Carly is reading for you.
Replace the sensor and you'll be sorted, no doubt.
I would suggest a genuine replacement item, however, if you try and cut corners with sensors they often come back to bite you!

as above,,jason bwchiptune told me always dealers for sensors,,but this was nefore i had replaced my rear nearside abs sensor on my old e46 330d,,,had no probs with the sensor and still working when i sold the car..i forget where i bought it

Just had the front left wheel speed sensor replaced. All faults gone, problem fixed, jobs a goodun, happy days, thread closed!
