Clunk noise front end, only when cold outside.
Hello, i have this weird noise that keeps coming back now that the wheater is changing to the colder season.
i can tell that its coming from the front left wheelhouse, when going over speedbumps and potholes. Its like a clunk and chrunching noise at the same time if that makes any sense. I heard it during last winter but it i forgot about it when it got hotter outside. But now i can kind of hear it, but only when its colder than 10C (50℉). I tried to locate it by lifting the car up and wiggle everything, but i did not hear or feel any play in the suspension. Car is an 2006 e91 330xi 6mt Appreciate any help i can get! |

I have the same exact issue in my E90, coming from the passenger side and mostly when it's cold outside, going over bumps or potholes. I tried the same diagnosis and can't find any obvious free play in any of the suspension components. I even removed my swaybar and did a quick test drive yet the noise is still there.
Struts are the likely culprit, either an issue with the mount or the strut internals. Have you ever changed them before? |

I am planning to change to coilovers during next spring, hopefully that will sort it out. |

My guess is those struts are the originals and are blown. My front struts are original (2006 E90 330xi 136k miles). Front passenger is completely blown as its leaking. It usually hits the bump stop on harder bumps, producing a cringe worthy BANG

I replaced my struts and swaybar bushings this past weekend and I can still hear the crunching sound when cold, going over big dips or going too fast over speedbumps. On a positive note, the struts I replaced were the original ones from the car with 230K+ miles on them and were a mess. Car feels much better now! Though that creaking sound is still there.
Ball joints, thrust arm bushings, and control arm bushings all appear to be OK with no cracks, no slop, no free play, but it's still possible that one of those is causing the issue. However one thing for certain on my car is that the engine mounts are trashed and I'm thinking maybe that's the source of the noise. I get too much vibration at idle. If the mounts are collapsed and the rubber insert is cracked, the engine lifting and dropping when driving over bumps could be causing the creaking sound. |
