Aftermarket AMP with SUB on e91... pics
First of all I apologize for my bad English since I am Italian and I will make some grammar mistakes.
There are several thread about how to install an amp... but I am not asking... I am posting pics and info on how to install an aftermarket amp and thought was better making a new thread. I intalled an amp with a sub in my e91 with a professional 10 speakers active system. 1st picture shows the amplifier on the left side of the car with cables connected. 2nd pic shows the connector already open (there's a little tap to press to being able to open the connector; there will be two peaces one black one grey)... The tiny black cable is the remote (it's not a normal remote because it does supply +12 when you open a door and it will disengage after 5 minutesish after releasing the key). The twister pair "blueGreen +, BlueBrown -" is the Rear Right Channel. The twisted pair "YellowRed+,YellowBrown-" is the Rear Left Channel. As for making the connection you can use wire taps or make a cut on the insulator with a wire stripper, enlarge the cut with a lighter and wrap the new cable around it, carefull to not cut the wire itself, The second solution is the one I used.... very clean... pict #2 shows the whole cables connected. It won't take any space. 3rd pic shows the battery clamp where I connected the main +12 power cable. The battery is located on the right side 4th shows the circuit braker installed on the right side of the trunk. 5th shows the Aftermarket Amplifier Infinity 7520a running mono and installed under the trunk in the hidden compartment. 6th shows the subwoofer (MTX rt10-04) installed on the left side opening door where emergency kit is installed. A 9' cut required. 7th Overall clean trunk 8th my baby 320d touring, mystic blue, beige, poplar, panorama roof, electric seats, steptronic, professional audio, 160 wheels. I forgot to show the ground, but straight fwd, the GND- is connected to the left ground connector where all the other cables are connected. (there is also one on the right) Mission accomplished... I decided to install a subwoofer to listen to lower frequencies which the system is not able to do. The sub perform well and fill the car with the bottom end of the listening spectrum without being noticed. Hope info is helpfull.. Any question feel free to ask. Thank you for taking the time to post this thread! I know it will be appreciated by many members who are looking to do the same installation.
I have 2 quick questions for you: 1. Is your subwoofer enclosure fiberglass, or some other material? 2. Do you have any overheating issues with the amp installed in the hidden compartment under the carpet? I was hoping to do the same (in an e90, which I think has a different shaped compartment from your pictures) but was a little concerned about heat - there seems to be no ventilation. Any info you have on those questions would be appreciated. Thanks again! |

hi there,
the sub it is NOT installed in any enclose.. ii does use the space behind the panel. The panel is a plastic and is still moveable... you can see the handle from the picture.... That installation it is not ideal for the sub.... but I am impressed with the results. As far as the ampli I never had heat prolem the thermal protection never engage. One thing I saw the signal from the radio is lower to avoid distorsion so I run max volume prior distorsion also with the sub.... so I think the amp is not running any close to max performance and I don't think overheating will ever be a problem. Anyhow... worse case scenario the amp overheating protection will kick in... I'll be here to help for any other question Max |

Thanx for the details and pix of the remote wire source and rear channel wires!
You're fortunate with the touring that there's no isolation of the sub in the trunk, unlike the sedan which is very well insulated from the passenger cabin. If you put that sub into a sealed box, you would get even more awesome bass.

Wow, the one and only 320d in TX!!! With clear corners!!!!
You should put an alarm on these, there are many around here who would kill to get those. And thank you for sharing these fantastic pics and writup. Now please, could you post a pic of the back of the sub with the panel folded down? Did you reinforce the panel from the back? Congrats |

hi guys,
the sub panel has not been reinforced; I was thinking about doing it, but I tried without and thought it was pretty solid already. I'll post some more pics of the sub panel and also the GND connector for the amp. A couple more info.... If you want to install the same amp or another one with same dimension, be advised thet since there is a bunp in the middle of the "hole" under the trunk and there are 3 screws.... installation become difficult, I isolated the top of the screws and installed the amp without the bottom panel so the screws have some space inside the amp.... careful to check the screws will not run into any part. If you want to install a different sub search a sub that:... first the sub has to be designed to be installed in a small enclosure (strive for a recommended .75 cu. ft. sealed or less) and second make sure the mounting frame and magnet dimension allows the installation 'cause the shape of the plastic in the back of the panel does not allow a big one...... By the way the sub is a 10' sub |

It has been now a week of driving and the sub starts to break-in... it sounds deeper and deeper.. Amp and remote connection work like a charm..
I might still suggest a Sub which requires less space for enclosure.. ideally sub box of .35-.5 cu.ft. Max Last edited by wurz154; 02-27-2006 at 09:06 PM.. |

When you made the connection for the power to the battery, how did you make the connection. This battery and the black box on top of it is nothing I have ever seen before. I want to install a power inverter in the trunk and run if right off of the battery, but not sure how to connect to it.
thanks, Mark |

Battery connection...
If you look at the picture where the connection start from the battery.. there is a black male connector that can be pulled out... you can then put a female disconnect (don't remember the size, but it is larger than the one used for speakers). If you don't have the black black male connector with one empty hole... you can order a whole connector with female disconnect from your dealer.. I think they asked me $15, but I elected to go without it. Max |

The wire colors are the same for the e-90, assuming you have the 10 speakers with amp (I don't know if logic7 use the same connector)....
As far as using taps, I decided not to use them 'cause they are quite big expecially for 5... Max |

after 3 month review
Hi guys...
Now that I've been running this configuration for about 3 months.... The sub is fully broken-in and is giving just the low freq bass needed to fullfill the system. At times the sub appears not "present" which is how a sub should implement the system. It should just give the lower octaves... The amp set-up are as follow....: the gain is about 9/10 up (that is probably caused by the high level inputs being set-low to avoid distortion at high volumes), the frequency is set @ about 3/10, giving a freq cut of about 70hz, and the bass boost @ 50hz almost full up, giving aproximately 10db, that is probably necessary 'cause of the tiny space behind the sub causing the overall Q being high... However, not being an ideal box (not sealed, neither vented), the sub performances might be compromized.... Again I didn't want to have a sub box in the trunk. I had this sub sitting in the garage for a while, but If I was to choose a sub for that project i would find something that is designed for smaller box with a high SPL.... i.e. Dayton Quatro from PartsExpress #295-550. |
